Column: iPad > PCs

I don't need iTunes to listen to music or watch movies. GoodPlayer lets me stream and download straight to the tablet.

Yes it was, but I still want the 3G limit gone. It really hinders people that don't have wifi everywhere. Does the 3G limit apply to the cloud too? I haven't used the cloud at all.
To tell you the truth I haven't used iCloud (apart from syncing bookmarks and contacts) but there are no limits that I have found to things outside of the app store. I regularly transfer large files and it's not an issue.

I do agree that the 50mb limit is stupid.

seriously... you guys should REALLY research your "facts" before coming on here shouting how crap the ipad is

Well rather than moan - explain how we can use it without a PC/wifi nearby?

but it doesnt change the fact that you dont need a PC. If you buy an iPad, you can use it straight away, without ever having to connect it to a PC

He probably haven't upgraded to iOS 5 yet and I don't think he has wifi, because I know he was miffed about the 20MB thing - just like me(hmm I have wi-fi though, but only at home).

The only thing pre-iOS5 is the initialing the device that has changed?

I still need iTunes/PC to transfer, Facetime or even upgrade the OS.
You'll need it for sure to get certain apps too.

I wouldn't recommend an iPad to anyone without a PC, iTunes, Wifi link and unlimited plan. The first 3 being a necessity

no you don't! you can upgrade over the air. You can use dropbox and put content wherever you want. And if you're referring to copying movies onto the device, then your argument is stupid. If you're copying from a PC, then yes - you need a pc regardless of which table you're using.

No you don't.

iCloud requires iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad or iPad 2; a Mac computer with OS X Lion; or a PC with Windows Vista or Windows 7 (Outlook 2007 or 2010 required for accessing contacts and calendars). Some features require a Wi-Fi connection. Some features are not available in all countries. Access to some services is limited to 10 devices. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer in the iTunes Store.

I didn't say the iPad was crap. Hell I'd love one. I just personally think it's still too premature to buy one now, given my financial constraints and the positives of owning one.

They're in that awkward phase now where there's too much progress made in too short time, much like PC's were in just before and after they broke the 1Ghz barrier.
Personally I'm waiting for x86(x64) with 22nm chips and a full OS that supports my PC apps I'm used to. In other words, I don't want a tablet and a PC, I want the tablet to be my PC.

It won't be long now, I'm sure we'll see some awesome stuff from Asus and the like before then end of the year, or Q1 2013 at the latest.

When I bought the device, it had iOS4.x - and I couldn't use it the most the day. I upgraded the following day to 5.0 ... then later to 5.0.1 ... and now 5.1. I try keep uptodate.

I had wifi with a 10GB cap - BUT I had a ton of data on my device too that I'd hoped to use up before it expired. Hence, I was miff that I couldn't use that data nor create a hotspot for my PC or anything else to use that data

It's a rather pointless fluff piece - the PC market is mature and largely saturated, so most people who want one, have one, and as pointed out even a cheap PC is good for a number of years.

Tablets are better than PC's... at mobile content consumption. Untill such time as it becomes a viable platform for development, gaming and multimedia I can't see myself getting one.

That's iCloud. You don't need a PC to use an iPad.

TBH I'm not sure why they even say you need a PC for iCloud but I don't use it so . . .

Actually I think that it may refer to the iSync part, where it all comes together across various devices.

/troll face off

Did the iPad2 come with iOS5 ? I know that when family members got their FNB iPad2s, they all had to download and install iTunes before they could use it... has that all changed ?

Um.

No ... I couldn't go from 5.0.1 to 5.1 OTA

I eventually needed to go to (you guessed it!) a PC with iTunes, download it and transfer it!

No, I had 4.x on it. Can't remember but updated to 5 soon after.

Then you did something wrong.

I'm on my Facetime right now ... 'Connect to a wifi network to use Facetime' ?
WIFI ≠ PC. You really shouldn't use the two terms interchangeably.

Ok... another doff question... the iOS5 update... will it come through automatically, like with Windows and its updates, or does one have to actively hunt for it and manually apply it ?
