Just got off the phone with WBS support. All the training shows - all my queries were answered most efficiently. Well done & thanks!

omg, he actually posted something... welcome...

btw, can you tell me why I have to literally beg the operator to actually get a radio techie to have a look at the tower if i KNOW the tower is DOWN because I CANNOT get a signal?

instead I get told "yes, we're experiencing degradation of the northcliff tower"

degraded preformance is not equal BEING DOWN.

I then re-called in, pretended to be someone else, and said the Roodepoort tower was down, they immediately believed me and then got a technician to look at the problem. Amazingly, 15 minutes after I called, Northcliff went up again....

Why the whole dancing?

thought you had ADSL on the way ic?

the reason for fluctuating pings.... WIRELESS. It's the type of techmology :P they use. It has been debated over and over again back when Sentech first started. If you want stable pings without packet loss, go cable...

Noone I dont know what the confusion there was, sorry.

Funny you should say that, because this wasn't the only time it happend to me. It happens to me EVERY TIME I CALL IN ABOUT TOTAL SIGNAL LOSS ON NORTHCLIFF.

Note my carefully chosen words... EVERY and TIME. If it happened once, I wouldn't post it now would I?

In the last 4 weeks there were about 5 incidents where I received a red light, waited 20 minutes, then called support (if it wasn't already too late), I called 3 times (because two of those times were on a sunday just after 17:00) and all 3 times (different people like Tyrone/Sipho or someone and some other new dude, andrew?) told me there was degradation on the tower and it will be fixed on saturday 2 weeks from now.

"Hey well.. I can't CONNECT AT ALL, I realise there is degradation, but my modem is NOT receiving ANY signal, could you please have a technician look into it?"

"Well sir, everything should be fixed by saturday two weeks from now, we do realise there is some degradation on the tower, and we do apologize for it"

"Yes, I KNOW THAT, I am saying that this issue is NOT degradation, and could you PLEASE get a technician to check it out?!"

After some more ass licking and **** sucking, I eventually convinced the dude on the phone that there was indeed a problem with the tower and I couldn't connect at all.

The 3rd time it happened was last week Monday, luckily another user called in at the EXACT same time I did with a problem with Northcliff, and the call centre agent (he was the new dude speaking with Tyrone quickly to assess if there was something wrong) believed me  (well, after I was explaining to him for a 2nd time it's not degradation and I do infact keep a close eye on the incidents page)

This is just insane. "Sorry sir, you're the only one with the problem" rings too close to Sentech to actually believe WBS and Sentech is the same company....

IC The pings on iburst are stable. I have posted pings plenty times before to show you. You can rely on iburst for voip I do so everyday for hours, in fact i am running out of hours in the day.
Your question to iburst needs to address your problem, which is a crappy tower giving you a crappy signal. Try asking when will they fix your tower. You will know it is fixed when you get consistent pings to iburst of around 70-80ms

mmmm :-)

i like wot i c :-)

thing is , my modems on the end of a 3m pole in a plasic bag :-) , on the roof ....

yeah ... lol ... but she works well 120KB/s :-) , from ati.com , from windowsupdates, etc ....

IC I do believe that this will come right, VoIP is a very important aspect of the current changes in South Africa to do with broadband, we have to get it right.

Gallo Manor Base Station

Hi All,

I think I'm connecting to the new Gallo Manor base station. My signal strength has definately improved (from 2 -3 LED's to 4 - 5 LED's), but my speed seems to have decreased. I figured out that if I changed the orientation of the arial (horizontal vs vertical), it would change the base station (or at least that's what I think). If I move to another base station (either Midrand or Bryanston according to Dylan), my signal quality decreases (back to 2 - 3 LED's), but my speed increases. Have there been issues with the Gallo base station?

Although the station is probably less that 1.5 k's from me as the crow flies, I still get bouncing signal (ie 4 - 5 lights, not 5 consistently). Can this be my UTD or am I just unlucky?

By the way has anyone been able to download Skype? My download comes through at 7 - 12 Kbps then times out at the same place every time - after downloading about 654K. Any ideas?

Regards,

Michael

michael how sure are you that you are connecting to the new basestation, its just that in my experience the emptier the tower the better the speed, also what firmware is your UTD using and what are the respective frame error rates?

Hi Slimothy,

I'm not sure that I am connecting to a new base station - but my experience returns to what it was prior to the Gallo Manor base station going up. Firmware has been updated over the air. I'm not sure of the frame error rate as I have the UTD plugged into a wireless router (I checked the firmware with the USB cable).

I also base my assumption on my signal strength dropping - intuitively it makes sense that this will happen if you connect to a base station further away.

Regards,

Michael

i think you're on 2 possibly 3 stations and when you turn the modem you lose one of em completly.

Downloads stopping half way.

Micheal.. The possible reason you may only be getting to a certain point in your download is they are using a transparent proxy server which only has the bit you are receiving. All you have to do is shift-click the download to bypass the proxy and get the download " refreshed"

Cheers.
