Compatibility Issues with Huawei E220 USB Modem

Ok, lots of very confusing stuff in this thread.... i have a usb E220 modem in Windows Vista. When i plug it into the machine, it does not install the drivers. Just searches and eventually fails, so my machine cannot even see it. I have uninstalled Roxio and it is still doing this. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get this to work, i would really appreciate it!

Make sure you have firmware version 11.110.05.00.00 and Dashboard version 2.2.2.1.

Firmware is 11.110.05.00.67... do i have to downgrade this? If so, how do i do that? The "vista" drivers i have tried from MTN do not work in Vista. At the moment, as soon as i plug the device in the vista machine, it just hunts for drivers (Doesnt even mount its stupid little CDFS thing) and nothing i do seems to work in terms of installing the drivers.

Thanks. How do i Check the firmware, and how do i upgrade it? The drivers i have tried from MTN do not work in Vista.

Go Here to download the Dashboard and the Firmware.

You cant check what Firware version you have(only with version 3 of VMCLite), but you can check what dashboard version you have. Once you plug in the device, check under "My Computer" to see what it says(either version 1.x.x or version 2.2.2.1.)

You'll find version 2.2.2.1 more to the top of the page, and the firmware more to the bottom(just above the router downloads).

To upgrade it, you need to use an XP machine, dont do it on Vista. You just plug in the modem(remove the SIM before you do), run the files you downloaded(advisably the firmware first), and wait till its done.

The firmware i have: 11.110.05.00.67 looks newer than that other one? Do you know if there is an issue with the new firmware?

Where did you purchase this modem and when? I dont know if there could be an issue, but its not impossible either. By the way, how did you check the firmware?

v3g, is this firmware version also under testing?

I bought it from the MTN shop in Pavilion last week. I checked on a windows XP machine in the MTN software under Diagnostics for the firmware.

Could be the actual Vista machine i am trying on, its a new dell laptop (Back when you couldn't order the new dells with XP) and we have had endless trouble on it with drivers for the stupidist things like a Microsoft Keyboard etc. I don't really have another Vista machine here to try it out on.

So you're using a MTN E220 with a Vodacom SIM?

Nope, MTN sim. Sorry if i implied otherwise! Vista is realllly giving me grey hairs at the moment...

Isnt there any usefull info in the MTN Broadband Forum? Not sure if the compatibilty issue here applies to the MTN firmware and Sotware.

Disable embedded flash device?...

Guys,
I read with interest...
I want to remove the dashboard software from the device so that users cannot install the default connection to the WEB - our machines must not be connected directly to the internet for MANY reasons...

I have found I can grab the drivers from an installed dashboard, and install them separately to provide access the the modem, and then I can use the vodafone V7 dashboard with the 'other modem' option - this allows me to be prescriptive about the defined connection profile, and also permits me to disable the connection manager, preventing restricted users from creating an internet profile...
but I cant stop the damn autorun install if someone plugs it in another machine!

I was thinking a firmware hack with the bit that represents the drive content blanked out - any ideas?

How about disabling autorun on all the PCs? A nice side-effect would be it also prevents those nasty USB flash drive Trojans from spreading.

With VMCLite Version 3, they took away the Autorun Feature. I was sad at first, but i find that its pretty convenient, especially for what you are describing. I hope they keep it this way.

No Auto run

This could become quite debateable. If it is installed by a tech yes it would be ok but if assistance is given via telephone support it could become difficult. Open the modem & cut the track that goes to the autorun signal & replace it with proximity switch. So when you hold a magnet over it you can do an auto install.;):p

How to fix issue with Norton Ghost
I just had the issue described in vodacom3g's post; the modem kept resetting itself. I'm using Vista and Ghost 14, but it should work with earlier versions.

  1. Go Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools
  2. Open "Services" and go down the services list until you see a service called "Norton Ghost"
  3. Right-click this service, and select "Stop"
  4. Do what vodacom3g suggests in the first post in this thread, that is, insert the modem and remove the modem's CD drive letter (after you've installed the dashboard software).
  5. Go back to the "Services" list, right-click "Norton Ghost" again, and this time select "Start"

That saved me having to uninstall Ghost to get the Huawei modem installed.

Hope this helps someone!
