Compatibility Issues with Huawei E220 USB Modem

Thanks.
Filename is E220-UTPSB002D03SP04C03 (Normal)
http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=736

This is not a firmware upgrade, it will not fix compatibility issues with Vista.
Currently the files named E220-HOSTxxx install Huawei Mobile Connect and the files named E220-UTPS install Huawei Mobile Partner.

Win XP(SP2) OS:My problem is that I had to remove Deamon Tools, Alcohol120% and Any-DVD for the E220 to be picked up due to the virtual drives they create and i would like them back! :) Modem froze the system when it wanted to install the cd-drive for VMC-Lite software.

1) Being a newbie i dont quite understand the difference between Huawei Mobile Connect and Huawei Mobile Partner? Do they replace VMC as the dashboard software?
2) Would installing above keep VMC-lite on the modems mass storage device? And still want to install a virtual CD drive when reconnecting the modem?

Huawei E220 USB Modem vs Roxio Creator.

I have picked up a serious problem.

After I have started Roxio Creator and tried to log onto the Internet I received the following message in Mobile Partner.

"A new optical drive has been detected. This drive will be usable once the currently running projects have been completed."

Roxio See the Huawei E220 as a DVD-RAM Drive.

After running Roxio, and tried to connect to the internet, I received an Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.

Here is a log file of the error:

The problem is so severe that the notebook stop working and heve to reboot the notebook. After reboot the notebook do a Startup repair of the notebook and restore it to an earlier restore point that does work.

It seems that if you want to use Roxio Creator, make sure that the Huawei E220 USB modem is not plugged in. OR if the modem is plugged in and connected to the internet and you run Roxio Creator, and you disconnect from the internet, you have to un-install Mobile Partner, unplug the modem, restart the notebook and re-install mobile partner.

I have contacted Roxio, but they said I must contact Huawei. Huawei on the other side does not respond at all.

And my friend recently got a E220 and a laptop. Roxio loaded. He had no trouble installing it and using it. And in the past i had trouble with Roxio and the E220.

Compatibility Issues with Huawei E220 USB Modem

What is the fault / What does the user experience?

We have been able to reproduce the issues with VMC Lite 2.1.6.1 (E220 firmware 11.110.05.00.00) and the following applications:
Daemon Tools (tested: 4.9.1.0) <http://www.daemon-tools.cc/>
Workaround: Unmount all devices and afterwards close the program

VMC Lite 2.2.2.1(E220 Firmware 11.110.05.00.00).

Daemon Tools 4.00

Unmounted all Drives. Exited Software. E220 Picks and installs. Huawei Mobile Connect( ) installation starts in middle of setup of VMC Lite. Cancel installation(of Huawie Mobile Connect), and E220 dissapears.

Reboot(with VMCLite installed), plug in modem, driver detection starts again and same happens as above mentioned.

Flashed Modem with HMP. Installs without error. Works even with Daemon Tools running(emulations turned off)

AMOI H01 hsdpa usb modem

I am currently working/testing with an AMOI H01 modem.
Once the Dash software is installed & starting Dashboard, when it goes throught a process of initialisation the software and modem it unmounts the emulated CDROM. This might be the way to do with E220 dash's also. To get the cdrom active again is to unlug and replug the modem. If you start the dash it will unmount the cdrom again.

Oh by the way it has a very nice feature under the connect option where there is an option to view the call log. This call log can also be exported as a .csv file. I have actually posted the output in another thread. v3g. Even with the unscheduled discconnects it still logged the up/down data.

Again Today...

Customer with E220 and VMCLite 2.2.2.1.

Problems with installation.

Struggled a bit, then flashed modem with HMP.

Installation fisnished without ANY error.

v3g, i i think its a bit unfair that our customers ahve to use workarounds to get our product working on their system.

Why do they need to remove and/or disable software that they have been using for years just to accomodate our product?

If Huawei can do, why cant we???

I have send an e-mail to Huawei and it seemms to me that they are aware of a few programs that does influence the modem. They have asked me for more details about Roxio Creator Basic and it seems that it does cause some problems with the Huawei E220 USB Modem.

The problems only occure if the modem is plugged in and not connected to the internet, but if you first connect to the internet and then open Roxio Creator Basic, it work fine.

I hope to get an answer from then in the near future. Will post their findings as soon as I receive it.

Received a reply back from Huawei, and I must say I am not all impressed with them. Their reply and I quote:-

Dear Madam/Sir,

Thank you for enjoying our product.I'm sorry we have test e220 and Roxio Creator, they are incompatible,so please delete Roxio Creator and then use e220.
Best Regards

Do we have to un-install all programs that is incompatible with the modem?. What will be left?

Exactly the point i'm trying to make. Upgrade to HMP, it'll fix your problem.

Well I am using HMP at the moment and it seems that it does not solve the problem. With this kind of responce from Huawei, how does one know what software does work with Huawei E220. How will I know if I buy new software, that I will not get the same problem. At least I would expect from them to look into the problem and try to solve it. If I look at the list of all the programs that are mentioned in the beginning of this topic, it seems that there is a flaw in either their hardware or their software. Is Vodacom aware of this? I have paid my fair share for this modem. Did Vodacom or who ever sell this product to their customers, tested this modem and software to make sure that we do not sit with the problems that starts to surface?.

I have that initially HMP does the same as VMCLite, it doesnt work on the first attempt. What i did was disable the service that uses Roxio, then installed HMP, restarted(with the Roxio service) and then it worked like normal.

@Andrei1

Vodacom/Vodafone isn't responsible for the Huawei software.

Have you downloaded the latest version of VMC-Lite from Vodacom, I suggest you do so and try it. I am using Nero version 6 & haven't had any problems yet.

v3g did say in post 1 that it is a firmware issue & VC has requested Huawei to look into the problem. Use your workarounds for the now.

Andre1, as you discovered this has nothing to do with HMP, VM-Lite or any other dashboard.

Thus my annoyance when people don't understand that it's a function of how the E220 is presented by it's FIRMWARE, and not any software you can load on your PC, be it from Vodafone, Huawei, ginggs' tool or whatever else. (Wish they'd spend some time learning how an OS works before making statements on it's operation....)

Try the following and let me know if it solves your problem. We're going to disable the drive assigned to the E220. Basically, once the software is installed, we don't want the E220 to be seen as a filesystem anymore. These CD/DVD writers, try and take control of the filesystem and then gets horribly confused.

Follow these steps (assuming you're using XP):

Click Start
Right-click on 'My Computer'
Click 'Manage'
Click on 'Disk Management' under 'Computer Management / Storage'
Right-click on drive letter assigned to E220 (will be a CDFS file system
device)
Click on 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...'
Verify that correct drive letter is displayed in dialog
Click 'Remove' button
Click 'Yes' button in confirmation dialog

See if this removes the conflict with your app and let us know.

I say ditto to this procedure it should work. This is basically What the initialization procedure does when the AMOI usb modem's software start's up. It unloads/disconnects the emulated cdrom drive.

Thank you very much for the info. I have done it and it solved the problems. Why couldn't Huawei give me the info?

Again thank you very much.

The problem with the clash between the E220 and various applications seems to be around the fact that Huawei mounts the E220's flash as a CD file system (CDFS).

This happens when the modem is inserted into a USB port and has nothing to do with the dashboard that then loads. It's a function of the firmware in the modem and not the dash, be it from Huawei or Vodafone.

Posts in this forum that claims one dashboard is better than another is incorrect. Typically the statement is made that Huawei's dash does not show this problem. It does. It happend long before the dashboard software is installed or executed.

Try the following and let us know if it solves your problem.

Ok. Although this is another workaround that works, what is Vodafone doing to better the product in terms of it being Plug and Play??? Our customers are buying our product under the impression that it is plug and play, which it is(in most cases), but what about the customers with this problem? And/Or the customers who completely computer illiterate?

And i agree, its got nothing nothing to do with the Dashboard of either HMP or VMCLite(it seems my posts are being interpreted that i am saying its the software). What i said was that upon doing the lastest Huawei upgrade(with every customer i had sofar with this problem), it solved it.

So somehow with the upgrade of the Dash for HMP, something else is upgraded too. I have noticed though, in the folder of where the upgrade file is, when you do the upgrade, it generates a file called "firmware" while it upgrades the Dash. Maybe this is related? I dont know.
