Hi,

I am currently ussing iBurst as my broadband service provided. I am starting a small home business and would like to know what my otions are for calls without using Telkom. I would like to be able to MAKE AND RECEIVE calls using voip. Apparently this is very cost effective, but I don't really know where to start or who to contact. Is it reliable?

i'd also like to know.

I'd assume you'd be using ADSL...which can't be done without Telkom. For the present at least.

Anyway, you'll definitely want to use unshaped adsl cap for VOIP. Skype etc doesn't seem to run too well on shaped cap.

In the current environment calls from Telkom phones to 087 Voip numbers are more expensive than to Telkom landlines i.e. 65c per minute versus 38c or as low as 17c in Callmore time. Many people subscribe to Closer packages which make calls to Telkom landlines even cheaper. Many customers may be reluctant to call your 087 number because of confusion regarding the cost. Look carefully at the Telkom Closer packages to see if one of these would not be more suitable.

Voip is most cost effective for international calls. Services such as Voipraider are more suitable for use with ADSL connections though as they offer free landline to landline calls etc. which use no bandwidth. Voipraider offers a one hour free trial so you can test out the service first to see whether or not it would meet your requirements. Some Voip services might not perform well over certain wireless connections.

If you want to receive calls you will need to pay a monthly fee for the use of an 087 Voip number (~R29 per month from www.telfree.co.za etc.) to receive calls. Telkom also offers a Waya Waya service which only costs around R10~R20 per month and does not require any expensive hardware such as an ATA etc.

Switch Telecom provides a VoIP line service for R49/month which you can access via iBurst (or ADSL).

This will give you an 087 number for incoming service and outgoing service and be the effective replacement for Telkom that you're looking for.
