Considering iPad 9: share your experience please

You’re thinking of the wrong product I think.

Keyboard is detachable and you can adjust the angle of the iPad on a flat surface to any degree you want.

Aaah that’s not too bad and I see what you mean.

Still it’s double the price of the folio and I have no need for the keyboard so I would still buy the Apple one instead.

But if you really want/need the keyboard definitely worth a look.

Looks like it could be quite bulky even without the keyboard though?

Yeah, I have need for the keyboard. Agreed if you don’t have need for a keyboard then I guess the folio is okay. It doesn’t give many options for standing the iPad. It’s either completely vertical or almost flat.

But yeah each to their own

I’ve spent so many years with the original iPad 2 folio that those angles are perfect for me.

I gave it standing upright vast majority of the time either on my desk next to my Mac or in the kitchen on top of my coffee machine or air fryer.

Also if you trust the magnets as much as I do you can hang it on anything metal too.

I eventually went with what I feel was quite a good deal. Got a iPad Air 4 256GB Wi-Fi only from iStore Pre-Owned For R12k. ( I lie, it was actually R11999). Not a mark on it.

What really impressed me though was I ordered it on Monday at around 19h00 and it was at the co-op in town in the deep platteland on Wednesday afternoon.

Nice one and enjoy!
I came to this thread hoping you avoided getting the 9th gen, not that there is anything wrong with that model, but given that you like to keep things for a long time I was going to suggest the Air 4 due to the A14 chip and newer design, it’s probably going to be supported for a very long time; both in terms of OS update features and accessories.

Thanks, I was about to go for a 64GB Air 5 when I saw this 4th Gen Air on offer. The 256GB was the thing that sold me on it. I think the normal 9th generation deals are great and its getting good reviews. As you say, the longer lifespan I'll get with the A14 chip is nice to know.

Thanks for all the advice you guys posted here, appreciated.

Please keep the updates coming.

Would be good to hear how your transition to an iPad as a single device goes and where you need to compromise etc.

iPad 9th Gen would be 100/100 perfect if it had stereo, top & bottom speakers.

I will gladly. Just waiting for a cover and screen protector to arrive so it can be put to work

bought an iPad 9 for a family member from US Apple store and they enjoying it. For something to consume media on and video calls it’s perfect.
I imagine that Mini is also quite a nice machine too.

Regarding single device, I used my iPad Air 5 with keyboard for 7 days in between MacBooks. However it’s hard to judge it objectively as I use a lot of apps that need install on MacOS.

That said, when it came to just emails, word docs, excel/numbers, anything website related and so forth the iPad proved fine. In fact often better to use on an aeroplane than pulling out a MacBook. The down side is anything specialist and/or dev/ops related probl needs apps you can’t run on it. VMs being an obvious one of course…

if i were to ditch a MacBook, which I wont, I would spin up a Windows365 or similar virtual desktop to use from the iPad that could fill the gaps in a way.

Yup one thing I needed was a native terminal shell and while there are apps obviously they connect somewhere else not locally.

So if I had to make any sort of permanent move in this direction I’d have setup a dedicated jump host in AWS.

There used to be some nice term apps, and then they went paid or introduce horrible features like "sign in so we can save all your ssh passwords on our server.."

ironically, iOS and iPadOS prob could give you a zsh shell anyway lol.

Yeah if you jailbreak the shell is right there.

Termius is that app you speak of I suspect. Would happily pay for it if they offered a once off lifetime license, but no they want a monthly one like so many so sorry for them.

Yep Termius is the one.
