how I hate MTN .... thieving buggers!!
their call center agents are arrogant and rude.
I got charged for content that I never subscribed to and they insisted that I did(according to their records).
I have asked them to deactivate content subscriptions for me, but apparently they cannot do that, and directed me to WASPA. This is has already wasted an hour of my time and still no resolution and not even sure if I will get my money back or how much more I might be billed. Surely there must be some recourse to this??
How can I get my content disabled on my phone??
Do the SP check anything before billing you?? or do they just trust these scumbag WASPs??

I started receiving Nelson Mandela quotes, without asking/applying/subscribing etc...

While roaming. :wtf:

Get home, and they stop.

So, I'm waiting for my bill:

a) Was I charged for the quotes?
b) Was I charged roaming rates for the SMSes?

If yes to any of the above, I'll call the callcentre once and record the conversation. If not satisfactorily resolved, I think I'll open a case of theft with the police. See what happens then.

its just sad that you have no real recourse .... any of these guys can claim that you subscribed and you just start getting billed.
I think that MTN(SP) should confirm with you that you want to subscribe to the service before allowing them to bill you.

I also got a "content charge" on my bill, for what I do not know.

Will be watching this thread.

brawler ... my charge came from 2 companies .... computicket(for a bible service :wtf:- never got any of these sms's, yet they claim I subscribed 3 times in November)...
and Tmobile( which they did not even tell me what it was for, all the lady could say was it some content like music, games, etc. and when I asked for a refund, she sounded surprised. Still waiting to hear if I am going to get the refund ... not holding much hope for this though ... will let u know how it turns out

Dude I am in exactly the same position as you. I checked my Cell C account online yesterday and they are charging me R8.75 a day for a service I never subscribed to. My bill is normally round about R400 a month now it suddenly is R 875 for December. There is no way I am paying this. I logged a complaint with Cell C and will be canceling my debit order tomorrow to prevent them from deducting anything automatically. This is just ridiculous.

Logo, the problem with this is that they will then report you to the credit bureau .. which is a bigger mess!!!
What i find so ridiculous, is that they bill you on behalf of a 3rd party, without any proof that you actually signed an agreement with that 3rd party.
So yes, those WISPS/whateva r slimy bastards, but then so too r our cell providers. I would love for someone to take them to court for this, as I am sure they can not prove any binding agreement, and thus should not have billed you.

A colleague of mine also started getting Tmobile content charges. He was billed R5 and swears he never subscribed. He is very tech savvy. Anyways, MTN gave him some VAS 083900 number to call to try to unsubscribe. This was busy and he tried several times. I then googled the VAS number and found a sms short code associated with it. Then I typed that in on the smscode site and got an 0861 landline number for T-mobile. He called them and they promptly unsubscribed him. But the proof is in his next bill...

Actually MTN is the strictest of all networks with WASP services. A double opt in and regular subscription reminder notifications are required. Sadly MTN, unlike Vodacom, dose not do any integration testing with new content services.

ajax... I had the same problem ... mtnsp gave me the wrong number .... but luckily I asked mtnsp to cancel those items and i got a sms from tmobile with their number on it. I then called it to make sure it was cancelled, but still waiting to hear about the refunds :(

davemc ... there really isn't one ... mtn has a number u dial *101# - this is parental control basically.
I have now set it to block the 3 types they allow(adult, chat and something else[can't remember now :)] ) ... will have to see if this works at all!!

There are 30 different types of service identifiers for MTN silent billing, and they only allow you to block 3 of them - how nice

yup .. rn't I lucky :)

anyways ... its like fighting a losing battle ... because u deal with such dumb ppl at the call center, that u just cannot prove ur point ... they just never get it !!!
Right now, just waiting to see if I get my refund ... even though its just a few bucks(probably cost more on calls trying to get the refund) ... I just hate that they can get away with stealing my money!!

just an update : got an email from WASPA to say that I have been removed from TMobileSA and Computek Mobile, and in this light they view the issue as resolved.
Firstly, I logged this complaint on 5 Jan 2011 and they only get back to me now!! Guess I should be glad that they actually got back to me at all.
Secondly, they do not even ask about the actual cost incurred, whether there was a reimbursement, if I had requested to be signed up, or check for any proof of my signup ... nothing!! ... this is absolutely pathetic. I responded to them with roughly the same gist ... lets see what they say.

another update : got an email from WASPA that the scumbag service providers will be refunding my money and will contact me in the next 7 days to arrange this. I have my doubts on whether this will happen, but lets wait and see.
The problem is that they did not even mention the issue about me being charged, without even subscribing and how they plan on dealing with that!!
So will email them soon about that, and see what response I get if any!!

Anybody got the number for T-Mobile? I'm also getting content charges on MTN, and i have not subscribed to anything...

Also got charged for the last 3 months, complained last month and MTN said they will send a request to remove me from the list, this month I was charged again. Now what am I supposed to do, it’s not large amounts but they are basically stealing from me

I have still not received my refunds(3 months on), and the only time the guys respond is when WASPA sends an email or WASPA is copied on the email. So your best bet is to get WASPA involved.
For Tmobile, you can try 0878204085
