My daughter got her phone via a friend with MTN. I pay for it from my bank account. This phone contract is now 27 months old.
Her friend went to stop the bank deduction 4 months ago at MTN as my daughter emigrated to the UK.and we have no use of this. Their computer was down so the agent there said he will sort it out later. BIG BIG problem.
Nothing done.
He then went back a month later and did all the requirements to stop the payments. However this did not work as the payments were still deducted.

When I told the chick at Longbeach Mall that the only way I can stop this deduction is to stop payments to MTN via my bank she said"
"If you do that, we will blacklist you"

WOW.

With things like this, i'd make sure i get it all on paper. Tell them you want to sign a paper saying you are CANCELING, you want a copy, a date and everything. Isn't that how it works? I've not yet cancelled an MTN contract [will soon though], but i certainly had to sign papers to get my Vodacom contract cancelled...i knew [and Vodacom knew] exactly when the contract is going to end.

If it doesn't happen then you are in a much better position when telling the bank to stop payments.

Prob is that the contract was with her friend and the payment is from my bank account. We now have no contact with this friend.

They cannot blacklist You if the contract ain't in your name. They won't provide you with the contact details of this 'friend' so the only way to cancel it is to turn off the phone, remove the SIM and never use it again. Now cancel the payment. They'll 'blacklist' the friend, not you. Problem solved.

If they are able to blacklist you, it means you should be able to cancel the contract.

Let them blacklist him, so what. Not like it will change anything. I've had such threats too, just showed them the middle finger, did not affect my credit record at all.

Yet another (of many) reason to AVOID CONTRACTS AT ALL COSTS. The one positive thing about South Africa is that almost everything is prepaid these days...landlines, electricity, cellphones, etc. Just waiting for the day that water and rates are prepaid too. And then you can be off the system permanently.

My daughter has a 3rd party contract account and it ends next month. Problem is that she is emigrating to the UK and I pay for it. The phone is registered to a pal that has moved to JHB. We have no contact with him anymore.
We cannot write a letter to MTN to cancel the contract as we are not the owners of the contract.
How do I stop the payments?

TopUp contract fees increased?

How come my TopUp 150 contract increased from R198.00 to R217.00 as of last month. I paid R198.00 for 22 months and now it increases. What's up?

Who is the 3rd party and what way do we have contact, via e-mail perhaps? Give me something to work with and il do my best to sort it out.

Your last upgrade... did you upgrade when your last period was in 22 months? if thats the case whatever discount you had wouldve increased...

Yes, I did, but only after 24 months. My wife told me now that we paid more in the beginning then it went down and now up again. So I am not concerned.
Thank you anyway.

I sent you a PM

Contract expired, still charged?

Took out a contract phone on MyTopUp 150 on 29 May 2008. Today I got a bill for R217.00. WTF, the phone is now fully paid for, so why must I still pay R217.00 for R150.00 airtime?
Can't MTN get ANYTHING correct???

Did u cancel or renew or upgrade the contract.
A well known fact about all cell companies is that YOU have give a months notice to cancel (renewal or unpgrades are immediate).

And remember that you need to give a 30 day notice ... whoops there goes another R217.00. EISH sorry ne'

No sorry. I will see to that. I will reverse the bill. Their 30 days notice is bulldust.
If you buy a car on a 54 month payment plan, will you keep paying after 54 months. I think not. I am not an idiot. You are.
There are laws to protect consumers. Actually, you don't even need a "Law" just common sense. I hereby challenge MTN to keep charging me.

Happened to my mom about 4 years ago. MTN didn't notify her that the contract was due to expire, so she had to pay two months in full on a MyCall 100.
