Cool Ideas Fixed 5G/4G Feedback Thread

I'm assuming these routers are not network locked and can be used with any network once your contract is finished?
Correct ! They are not network locked. There are no contracts or lock-ins or hidden extra charges. I use a TymeBank debit card to pay for my service every month so I do not pay any additional debit order charges. I am sure that you will be able to find a product that performs well and saves you money !

Apparently Cool Ideas will also be offering a Telkom option in addition to the Vodacom and MTN packages which should appeal to many customers.

I'd like to switch from Vodacom (through a different provider) to MTN LTE/5G through CoolIdeas, but when I run the coverage check, it only shows Vodacom as an option for my address.

I know MTN has signal in my area because I was previously on an MTN LTE package through another ISP and found it stronger, with better tower coverage than Vodacom. I'm just not sure whether MTN 5G is available here, so my guess is the coverage checker is only checking for 5G and ruling out MTN entirely because of that, even though MTN LTE might work fine.

Three questions:
1. Is that why MTN isn't showing up, does the checker require 5G coverage, not just LTE?
2. If so, is there any way to sign up for MTN LTE specifically, or am I limited to the Vodacom option shown?
3. Would I be able to get public IP for gaming, or is it only CGNAT?

For context on why I want to switch: most of my current issues with Vodacom 5G (through my current ISP) seem to be routing-related rather than signal-related. Only a small number seem to be actual tower/signal problems.

Hi there. Thank you for reaching out.
Yes it won't show coverage if you are only covered by 4G/3G. We used to provide Fixed LTE with MTN, but they have since been throttling that network a lot which they don't do as aggressively with 5G.

Unfortunately you would be limited to Vodacom in this instance.
3. Would I be able to get public IP for gaming, or is it only CGNAT?
It would be CGNAT, but we have had a few requests in this regard, so perhaps in the future we would have this option available, however it's not far up on the priority list at this stage unfortunately.

If there is anything else you would like assistance with, please do t hesitate to reach out :)

I am in a similar situation, according to the MTN coverage my neighbours 2 houses away have 5g but I don't, according to the official MTN coverage map, but I have a capped MTN fixed lte sim from afrihost which I have in a 5g router and my 5g signal and speeds are great, but for some reason MTN thinks I'm not covered for 5G so it blocks me from signing up.

What coverage do you get on this map ? 5G Mobile, Home Internet etc. ?

Apparently this is the coverage map to determine the availability of the MTN Shesh@ service.

@CoolEscalator i hope I am not jinxing anything, but it seems stable since the changes you guys made last night.

Something happened for 10 minutes at 7am this morning, but wasn't around to run traces to see what the issue was, other than that it seems to be working well so far.
