I have finally decided on getting either the:

AMD Phenom II 965 3.4Ghz black edition Quad core

or

AMD Phenom II 945 3.0Ghz Quad Core

For a new system for GAMING. I was automatically going for the 965 because its awesome but it now turns out I can get the 945 for R600 less without losing too much power.

My decision then changed to the 945 with intentions of overclocking until I saw that the 965 has an unlocked multiplier meaning I can overclock happily with that chip.

decisions decisions

Thoughts?

Where you getting them from? Why not get the 955? Takes 5 seconds to OC to the level of the 965. Also, the 945 will OC to 3.2ghz, it only takes a bit longer to have everything running stable. But it will probably not OC to the same max level as the 955/965.

Go for the 965 or the 955 like archer said. I have the 965be, fantastic piece, don't need to overclock it so I'm very happy.

Sorry for derailing your thread a bit dude, but I'm also struggling to make a decision. Intel i7 or AMD Phenom.. don't know what would be more worth it:wtf:

Gaming go amd, all round use for work stuff like photoshop go intel.

You can get such a sweet mobo for like 1.5k with a 965 :D.

Depends on the use of the machine. For 90% gaming you can go with i5 750, or Phenom X4/X6. If you do a lot of photoshop, rendering etc then the i7 makes more sense.

Yeah I know, I'm prepared to spend quite a bit since I was considering an i7 but if AMD is really good for gaming, better than Intel then I will get AMD rather. I've had Intel for a while now so I'm a bit behind on what AMD can do these days :D

I want a PC purely for gaming!

For games there is no discernible difference between AMD/Intel.

Well then, I'd say my money would be much better spent on top range AMD hardware! Instead of paying a years salary on an Intel motherboard alone ha ha ha :D

Whats wrong with that? At almost a grand cheaper it is a viable option for some....

I wanted to upgrade to the ddr3 platform as a sort of future proofing in case my wife ends up pregnant and i don't have cash to spend on anything for years to come.

After doing hours of research and thinking, i ended up disregarding that cpu, especially since it stands toe to toe with a i3.[I want good now, as i purchased a core2duo e6600 and it served me well for over 3 years.]
Im thinking 2 years ahead where hex and octacore cpus will become mainstream and i would then possess a cpu below a Phenom2 x4 today.

The lack of L3 and small L2 on the Athlon x4 is a real turnoff for me anyways, and i would not have that cpu very long on my new platform, whilst doing myself a disservice for not spending more.....

I thought you where on my side. ;)

Go for the I5 750, way easier to OC than AMD.

Lol I am but if he is set on AMD then thats my recommendation :)

If OP wants to consider Intel
I bought some parts from vision technologies:
i5 750
Asus P7H55-M (USB3+SATA3)
1GB 5770
500Gig HDD
R5000 on the dot..
Which is quite respectable for a walk in store :)

And when people say AMD is better for gaming.. You smoking some good stuff. In the past it was true.. At the moment Intel owns AMD in games! Well in every bench mark I've seen atleast 90% of the time Intel wins. This is in terms of fps and comparing the i5 750, i7 860, i7 930, PII x4 965, PII x6 1055T and PII x6 1090T.

At the moment the only reason to go AMD is if you want a cheap 6 core.. or cheaper crossfire/sli x16 x16 setup.

And as for the athone x4 rather go i3 530 if your intention is to game. It to beats that AMD chip hands down in gaming. http://www.anandtech.com/show/2901/12
