Hi

Last night i dropped my iPhone and the screen smashed...

iphone.jpg

What's the best way ahead:

- Insurance will charge me 20% replacement excess (which will be more than the repair) - it's my 3rd claim in a year :(
- Cheapest repair quote I can find is R1500 - does anyone know of something cheaper?
- I could sell it cracked and then... i dunno....
- Due for upgrade in Feb

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Cry :(

These screens are a pain, I tried doing the glass replacement on my Samsung but no luck, ended up buying the new screen with digitizer, cost just over a grand.

Either fix it and then sell it when you upgrade or put your sim in a cheap phone till upgrade time.

Then get a Samsung with drop warranty :D

Thanks :) How does the drop warranty work? Maybe I should just get it fixed and then sell it when i upgrade to a Samsung ;) That's probably the best idea. Thanks!

Register your phone when you get it, then you get two free screen replacements, accidental liquid or physical damage.

Yeah, the warranty of Samsung is what sold me, I dropped both my previous phones and I have two paperweights now. So just decided to pay a bit more and get the S4.

Well, if you still want to use that phone until you upgrade, pay the excess or repair out of pocket. Otherwise buy a phone in the price range of what the repair would cost you.

How much is your phone insured for and whats your premium?

Yeah, iFix quoted R1800. So R1500 is pretty decent... but still... it feels so crazy just for a phone screen... ya know?! :wtf:

It's the digitizer that causes that, if just the glass is damaged then you may be able to find a repair shop that will just replace the glass and that is really cheap but that crack looks like it done a lot of damage.

WTF? Isn't Gorilla Glass meant to be strong and resistant to things like this?

It's only on Band 4 (R7000), my premium is R129pm. I should have left ages ago. The excess for the third claim will be R1400! And I won't get the full value covered either.
That sucks
My note 3 they want R125 for R9000
I think its too much

My nexus fell from the roof of my car onto the garage floor, I was amazed that it just had a hair crack from the corner it hit to the middle of the other side, the phone still worked fine, did not even notice it. Then it fell again and the lower half of the crack shattered and that was that.

Gorilla glass is great for scratches and minor falls, but generally if it drops on a hard surface you will be lucky if it does not break.

As far as I know the digitizer and screen are fused together which makes it almost impossible to replace just the glass (I have repaired a few screens from 3G-4S). There are ways to get them seperated but 99% of the time you will end up damaging the digitizer so it is always best to get the complete set.

If you can source the screen yourself it should be simple to replace gfollowing this GUIDE - compared to the 4 and 4S, the 5 looks simple to do as the 4 and 4S you literally had to take apart the entire phone and remove every screw but with the 5 the screen comes off first.

If you confident enough, this will be the cheapest way to get it fixed.

Yeah it is glued in place, with a heat gun and a lot of experience you can get them apart and then glue the new glass in place. The glass costs around R80 so if your digitizer is not damaged it may be worth the risk, I was just very impatient when trying, got rather far before breaking the digitizer, if I had applied more heat and waited I would have got it off.

I ended up buying a new screen and it was an easy replacement, saved my R600 doing it myself. Lots of video guides on youtube.
