Hi guys. Just got my adsl line setup in my new place and need some advice. Im connecting to the internet with my laptop via a USB modem (no router).

What Im trying to do, is create a wifi hotspot with my HP laptop (Windows XP) so that I can connect my HTC Desire HD smartphone to it and thus use the adsl internet as a data connection on my phone while Im at home... My laptop has a Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection.

Cant seem to make it work. Have read that you can create ad hoc connections etc. but cant seem to get that option anywhere...

Any software that I can use? (Connectify only works on Windows7)

A step-by-step walkthrough would be nice... :)

Thanx for the posts. Ive found out in the meantime that Ad Hoc and Android indeed does NOT go together... My DesireHD cant connect to the laptop through this connection as any other Android device... Amazing that no-one has thought of another way to make this connection. On all forums I just get people saying what you cant do... but no-one has an answer for how you can! But I'll get back to you guys if I manage to figure this out...

I have been down this road. Unfortunately the only chance you have of getting an android device to connect to ad-hoc network is if you root your phone and then overwrite a specific file with a patched version made by some random bloke.

Of course I never went that far as rooting my phone may void the warranty.

FYI rooting means gaining full access to the system files of the phone and seems like a mission to try anyway without risk of bricking the phone.

So I went out and bought a wireless router in the end, found a cheap piece of nonsense (Tenda) but it works :) was like R400 or R500 rand or so.
