Cricket: International Discussion Thread

Indians will do well to get past 300.

It all went wrong when Gambhir was too lazy to run 3....

Viru is a game-changer..... and the difference between him getting out early and batting the entire day is often 100+ runs for the Indians.

The team is reliant on a good start and to throw away wickets with a run-out is beyond comprehension.

India 316
England 113/0 (39.0 ov)

Cook 77*
Compton 36*

England trail by 203 runs with 10 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

They're making this look easy. India will rue their lost opportunities, e.g. Sehwag's run out.

51.5 Ashwin to Cook, 3 runs, paddle swept from outside off and that'll do it! Cook has his 23rd Test century the most by an England batsman

Congratulations lad!

History made here in Calcutta, what a moment for Cook, who made his debut seven years ago here in India, now beats Wally Hammond's record that was set in 1939, what an achievement...

Wally Hammond's record is superb. And the fact that he got wickets too. Much like Kallis.

Boycott, Cowdrey and Pietersen also have 22 Test centuries but Hammond set the mark that until now has not been beaten...

Pietersen likely to keep challenging for more centuries.

Ojha to Compton, OUT, but he's gone now, attempting a paddle sweep, missed, it looked in line and given out lbw but not after Rod Tucker has shaken his head! Bizarre but Compton's gone. No idea what the umpire was doing but if Compton didn't glove the attempted sweep he was caught bang in line, not sure whether glove was involved but India have the breakthrough

NRD Compton lbw b Ojha 57 (137b 6x4 1x6) SR: 41.60

Not sure what that's about, seems there might be some controversy there? Nonetheless, he's gone.

Cook will beat all test accumulation records. Most 50s, 100s, tests, runs, etcetera.

For England or Internationally? Definitely England, as he has a superb temperament. And I have no doubt he will be one of the 10,000+ club.

Cook's damn good :O He's definitely a lot better than Sachin the "legendary". For that, I'm really glad.

Kallis will be a fixture of the Proteas while he still has the desire to play. So long as he has the desire, he'll be making runs.

Sachin is busy buggering up his record by playing to long.

Matches : 192 (Currently his 193rd match)
Innings : 317
Runs : 15 562
Average : 54.60

I really don't see how you can bugger up a record like that. What you don't realise is that Sachin was playing at an international level while Alastair Cook while still in his diapers. Sure Alastair Cook is a good player but he hasn't accomplished anything near what Sachin has. It also doesn't really count when playing against third-grade bowling attacks on flat pitches.

He used to average closer to 58 a year years ago, his average was higher than Kallis's.
So that's a bugger up right there.

1 century in the last 2 years.
Averaging 26 in the last year.

He would be the one playing on the flat pitches in India.
You know the ones where sehwag scored his 300's on?

England would have the seamen / swing friendly piches.
Cook has become the youngest player to reach 7000 runs, amongst other things.

Cook is definitely got a really big future if he carries on like this. He is consistently getting big runs and against all opposition and pitches. He has also been a banker for the team and often been the difference in good and disastrous starts.

I agree his average has dropped slightly, but that does not undermine the fact that he still his one of the greatest batsmen of all time. Sachin Tendulkar was scoring 100's from the age of 17 against some of the best bowling attacks in the world on some of the most seamer friendly pitches in the world.

When he burst into Test cricket he was playing in an era that had seen some of the best bowlers emerge. These include, Courtney Walsh, Curtley Ambrose, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shane Warne, Mularitharan, Allan Donald along with Brett Lee & Shoaib Akthar at their peak towards the end of the 1990's.

Secondly, Tendulkar has scored only 19 of his 51 Test centuries in India, although admittedly there would be a few more scored on the flatter pitches in the sub-continent. It should also be mentioned that he has been dismissed 20 times between the score of 90 and 99 and 17 times between the score of 80 and 89. If those scores had been converted to hundreds, we would have seen more centuries than he has been credited for.

I will admit that Alastair Cook handles captaincy much better than Sachin Tendulkar did many years ago. Cook has not only accepted the challenges of being a captain but has flourished from it given his recent form.

In my personal opinion I believe that Sachin Tendulkar is a better batsmen than Alastair Cook. I also stand by my opinion that Sachin is one of the greatest batsmen of all time, not the actual greatest but among some of the greatest such as Don Bradman, Garfield Sobers, Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Jacques Kallis and Graham Gooch.

I was watching cricked when he made his début, so I don't need a history lesson.

What I'm saying that he is fsking up his legacy when he should've retired at least 2 years ago.
Or straight after the World Cup at least.

Get out at the right time and stay out.

Its hard to draw a comparison between a right-handed batsmen and a lefty.

Let's compare Cook to Lara and there really isn't any comparison.

Cook doesn't strike me as a destructive batsmen that can take an attack apart... He has a good enough technique and temperament at Test level which makes him score consistently with a high average.

Tendulkar has done and achieved it all... Even Don came out and suggested that Sachin reminded him so much of himself.

Cooks will do very well to end his career with a 50+ average. Let's judge him in another 10years...

India cruising for a crushing in this game. Their batsmen don't seem to know how to deal with the English bowling attack.

And a sub standard pitch.

Hope it backfires on them.
Cowards! Didn't they pull a similar stunt against SA when they risked losing a series that one time?

Monty and Swann pwned them last game in any case, so that will probably backfire against the English.

Tea - Day 1

England 133/4 (65.0 ov)

Pietersen 68*
