The Nashua Cape Cobras strode to their third consecutive MTN domestic championship win with a six-wicket conquest of the bizhub Highveld Lions in Cape Town on Wednesday.
The Lions totalled what looked like a decent 234 for five, but the Cobras cruised home with four overs remaining in replying with 235 for four.
In the process Alviro Petersen's clinical 103 was overshadowed by Andrew Puttick's 57, another 57 by Justin Kemp, and Henry Davids's unbeaten 86.
Opener Petersen's innings loomed large in stands of 61 for the first wicket with Stephen Cook (21), 84 for the second with Blake Snijman (51), and another 70 for the fifth wicket with Werner Coetsee (43 not out).
Petersen was run out in the last over of the innings when fast bowler Charl Langeveldt followed through athletically to throw down the stumps with the centurion just short of his ground.
Petersen and Cook were in control until the 14th over, when Tyron Henderson had Cook caught behind by makeshift wicketkeeper Puttick.
Snijman and Petersen maintained the scoring momentum until the 28th over when left-arm spinner Con de Lange broke through.
The otherwise composed Snijman had just gone to his half century when he played an ill-judged sweep and popped up a catch to Henry Davids at short fine leg.
Eight balls later the Cobras were celebrating again when Paul Adams dismissed Vaughn van Jaarsveld for a mere single, and three overs after that Kemp ran out Jimmy Kgamadi for five.
That reduced the Lions to 157 for four in the 32nd over, but Petersen and Coetzee steered the visitors away from further trouble with sensible batting.
De Lange's one for 35 from his full quota of nine overs was the best of the Cobras' bowling figures.
Cliffie Deacon removed Herschelle Gibbs (four) and Henderson (nought) with consecutive deliveries in the second over of the Cobras' reply.
But Puttick and Davids put matters right in their stand of 82 that ended in the 15th over when Puttick tried to pull a ball from Craig Alexander and feathered a catch to the wicketkeeper.
Kemp joined Davids to share 95 for the fourth wicket, the key stand in the match, and Davids and Stiaan van Zyl (25 not out) finished the job with their unbroken effort of 54.
