Smith is a good batsmen !!
You can not argue that.
Whether he is a good captain or not is up for debate. Whether the captaincy role influences his batting is also up for debate.
But whether he can bat and whether he belongs in the team is a no brainer. You don not achieve what he has if you can not bat.

The problem with Smith being a "good" batsmen is that he only has one style of play, across the line.
All the bowlers know this and uses it as an advantage. He needs to change it already, Thats what good batsmen do.

That's the problem, there is no one else really.
Boucher or Kallis would be the obvious answers, but neither of them wants the captaincy. But the players are happy with him as captain, they all want him as captain, so I don't think we will see a change.
As far as Smith having only one batting style, I think you are wrong.
Yes he is at a point in his career where he needs to work hard and make some changes, but it is mostly mental, not technical, I believe.
He is the 2nd youngest test players to reach 4000 test runs behind Tendulkar, and so on and so on. You don't achieve that if you have MAJOR TECHNICAL issues. He is in a bit of a slump as far as form goes, but he will get through it.

And I am just a big supporter of South African cricket, I enjoy watching cricket and enjoy it even more when we win.
And I have learned that to be negative about someone as important as your captain makes watching cricket really $h1tty, so rather be positive.
I assume that if you are against Smith then victory at Newlands, and Smith being Man of the Match, must of really sucked for you ?

Then again with his excelent bowling you would not want to take a chance of also using the excuse when performance drop. Poor little Dippenaar is waiting to bat, Amla might not play in the world cup(all that about him being a test player is BS, playing ODI's got him into the SA squad) they can easily score 20-30 odd runs.
Smiths form is vital to the team, he stuffs up he puts immense pressure on the middle order and in the world cup chances are they gonna crumble.

Problem here is that nothing much is said about Smith when he does well. He won two tests with good captaincy and provided contributions against India but everybody overlooks that.
when he does badly then the lynch mob comes out...

He never resigned, he was relieved of captaincy after the 2003 world cup. He was doing a good job, and fired because of one failure to read the duckworth-lewis system.
I am sure Dippenaar will go to the World Cup, he has one of the best records of any of our batsmen in the West Indies.
Amla has never played a ODI, I assume you mean local one day cricket?
As for Smith, you must remember that he is not THAT good, there are WORLD CLASS bowlers out there who are suppose to take wickets every couple of overs. The new ball is suppose to take wickets.

There's was more to it than that I remember...was more of the case of lack of imagination. He was never an innovative captain and would always set standard fields under certain conditions. That's what happened at WC 2003 and before that as well...we had a decent team with players on form but when the opposing side dominates us, Polly never tried moving his field to change the situation and just waited and waited. By the time he figured it's time to make a change, it was too late and we were already about to lose.

Was always pondering about this? is there never a chance to move Smith down the order. He always seems to either get out in the first 5-10 overs. Past that and he'll go on and do well. Seems like something to do with the new ball..I guess he's always opened since he started playing schoolboy cricket but can always try.

One of my gripes about Smith was that he initiated Kluseners early dismissal from the team.

The problem with our cricket is NOT with any of the players in the team, but with the coach and management.
Every player deserves to be there, for now. I am sure there will be couple at the world cup that should not really be there, but what can I say, apartheid was a bitch.
But our management and coaching staff are up to $h1t, how can you not have even 1 ex test player somewhere in your setup, how are Micky Arthur or Haroon Lorgat suppose to know what the players really need to get back into form, or what the pressure out there really is like.
No other test playing nation has a similar setup than ours, they all have ex test players, and bloody good ex players as well, running their cricket.
