What did he do wrong? He almost won the the first test in the ashes, what more do you want from him?

Win the game, almost means zip in sport. Why was north a part timer bowling at the end and not one of the recognized seamers?
He managed to win a test against India by bowling Michael Clarke at the end of the day.
No reason to not try something like that again.
Michale clarke had bowled and taken wickets in the game before that moment and had take wickets against india before that as well. If Michael Clarke was bowling at the end vs england I have no issue but I do have serious question marks about north.
Oi...I was the one who said he was over-rated as a captain:erm:

Snatched a draw from the jaws of victory ???
Well the way i see it is ricky could have bowled his recognized seemers and still drawn and you guys would be saying why did he not try mix it up and bowl a part timer, so there is no real way he can win![]()
Latest news is that Ponting was trying to get as many deliveries as possible in.
M.Clarke could do the same and has the reputation of getting people out. If you wanted to get more deliveries in you go for some like clarke you don't go for north.
The Aussies are the last team who should comment on ' the spirit of the game '.
As if they wouldn't have done exactly the same thing if the situation was reversed. They weren't good enough to finish off the tail-enders - game drawn so move on Ponting.
"Had the words been spoken by just about anyone else on Planet Cricket, they might have carried some weight, but from the diminutive Aussie they smack of crass hypocrisy," wrote Matthew Syed in The Times.
"This is a man who has turned slow play into an art form. Australia have been fined 33 times for slow play since 1995: 20 of them under Ponting's captaincy and eight times since the start of 2008.
"This is a man whose attempts to put pressure on umpires has become so sustained, insistent and aggressive that it has started to cause concern at the highest levels of the game.
"This is a man who has been fined six times for breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct (in addition to the fines for time-wasting).
"Had the positions been reversed, we all know what would have happened. Ponting would not merely have sent on the 12th man and the physio; he would have dispatched the batting coach, the doctor and the team toe-nail cutter.
"Hell, he would have sent out Dame Edna, Rolf Harris, the cast of Home and Away and Skippy the bush kangaroo if he thought he would have got away with it."

I'm sure he'll still be fit enough to play IPL.

Yea and they said they cannot keep him in the test team as a batsmen, which is a bit odd though considering they do not have many batsmen as good as him. So now they can add an extra tail to their line upwhen he goes anyhow.
"averaged only 28.25 with the bat and 34.68 with the ball in 23 Tests (both figures down on his overall Test record of 31.69 and 32.51), and he has not managed a century or five wickets in an innings in any series since then".
In the 25 matches that Flintoff has missed since 2005, England have won 12, drawn 10 and lost on only three occasions. In the 23 matches in which he has been present, those numbers are almost exactly reversed - won 3, drawn 7, lost 13.
