Can i ask why the slow ball is not used as much in test match cricket?

It is so effective in pro 20 and i know the mindsets are different but surely bowling slower deliveries even in a test match cricket could yield results.

pro20 has 20 overs in which you bowl. in a test you can bowl anything north of 90 overs.

to answer your question, of course it is used. but given the above, it becomes less noticeable.

It's just Ntini who doesn't use it, otherwise I've seen most bowlers using it.

aye. but probably a good thing.

:) Shame

Heckling shocks Ponting
2009-07-25 14:06

London - Australia captain Ricky Ponting admitted on Saturday that he had been surprised by the aggressive nature of the crowd at Lord's during the second Ashes Test against England.

Ponting was frequently booed, a treatment he had not expected to experience at the home of cricket.

"I'm not sure why I was so much the bad guy with the fans," Ponting wrote in the Daily Telegraph.

"Lord's is the one place around England where you don't expect to get heckled. You tend to get a more subdued, cricket-loving crowd and one that's more focused on what's happening in the game.

"But I guess any Australian captain is going to cop it over here. Some people have said it's because I'm the last one out of that group of players who had a lot of success in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Perhaps it's just payback time."

Ponting also admitted that after a strong showing in the series opener, Australia's batting was below par in the second Test.

But despite his disappointment he hinted that changes would be unlikely at Edgbaston on Thursday.

"Our batsmen can't get off too lightly; a first-innings total of 215 was a couple of hundred under par on a very good pitch. Personally I was disappointed that my own quiet form at Lord's continued and I might have to think of carrying on until the 2013 tour just to get my name on that honours board.

"But, even so, I am not expecting too many changes ahead of the Edgbaston Test."

Starting today :)
Australia's selectors have pulled a major selection surprise by axing Phillip Hughes from the starting XI for the Edgbaston Test. The move, as revealed in The Australian newspaper, will see Hughes make way for Shane Watson after a string of modest totals prompted by a susceptibility to short-pitched bowling.

Hughes managed 36, 4 and 17 at Sophia Gardens and Lord's, and posted scratchy innings of 10 and 68 in the most recent tour match against Northamptonshire. He had been expected to retain his place in the Australian starting XI on the back of his sublime debut series in South Africa, during which he posted centuries in both innings of the Durban Test, but fundamental flaws in his technique have prompted the selectors to act.

Whether Watson will replace Hughes as opener, or take his place in a reshuffled batting order, is uncertain. The all-rounder impressed with quickfire innings of 84 and 50 against Northants, but possesses only a modest Test average (19.76) and has never batted higher than No. 6 in the five-day game.

Golden boy has been dropped.
Interesting...

Money on Watson to get injured before the day is out.

Poll running on aussie site has him being injured before game as most likely and reason for injury "glare from Flintoff" most likely:D:D

I don't rate Watson too highly, they're trying to make up for not having a Flintoff in the side.

10.30am "There are some dirty clouds rolling in from the north." Thanks, Miller. And indeed the covers are on and there is some rain spitting.

"Why are you Cricinfo guys acting so surprised about Hughes dropped for Watson?" asks Chris H. "Everyone has been predicting it since Lord's, yourselves included." That doesn't make it the right decision, though. Alex Brown remains furious. "I am in possession of a high-powered rifle and am perched atop the pavilion," he threatens.

And it's worth noting that Shane Watson has usually batted at No. 4 for Queensland in Sheffield Shield cricket. When Justin Langer retired, Watson tried opening in the Shield to push his case as a Test opener. In his only six innings opening he made 0, 0, 0, 15, 13 and 0. "Hmmmmm," opines Brydon. Hmm indeed. Here are his Test stats thus far, averaging 19.76. Never batted higher than 6 for Australia...last four innings were single-digit totals.

One of Australia's selectors Merv Hughes is speaking to the Australian commentators at Edgbaston and while he won't confirm the starting XI, he says the selectors always considered Shane Watson as a potential opener. "When we picked this squad everyone sat back and said we only had two openers. But we felt we had five, with Hussey, North and Watson. He [Watson] has opened in one-day cricket and done very well there."

Looks like a bit of rain still :(

11.45am The news is, there is no news. It's wet. The puddles are puddly.

"The sun is shining quite brightly for the moment, which is good. But that downpour has set the day back by two hours at least, I reckon," says Andrew. The puddles are back, and some - a fine effort from the rain once again. Impressive stability, just sitting there calmly and patiently and laughing in the face of the weak summer sun. This is intensely frustrating.

Watson on 55*

Australia 112/1 (26.2 ov)

Australia were dealt a major blow just moments before the scheduled start of play with Brad Haddin forced out of the side with a suspected broken finger and Graham Manou called in for his Test debut. Haddin sustained the injury while warming-up around the time of the coin toss, and his withdrawal will leave the Australians without the services of their first-choice wicketkeeper and leading run-scorer in this Ashes series.
Never heard of this oke

30 yo South Australian, second choice national keeper, couple of State centuries last season...not much more that can be known really.

England showed great sportsmanship by allowing this because effectively Haddin got injured after tha game started. Imagine Ponting 'keeping wicket...that would just add to his grumpiness.
