Cricket: Test Cricket

Smith gone!!

GC Smith lbw b Johnson 108 (228m 147b 13x4 0x6) SR: 73.46

Sh*it, i'll stop posting on here from now on! Everytime I post something, we loose a wicket!

Damn it, we in a bit of a hole now... Somebody is really going to have do something extraordinary if we're to win this test... I'm stating the obvious some what... Hate stating the obvious, makes me sound dumber than I really am..

Nice hitting from Kallis, a nice quick 20 runs and its great seeing ricky ponting bowing his head :D

Prediction for final day:

SA to win. I reckon they'll nail it and walk off winning the first test. To little runs required off way to many balls, and enough wickets in hand.

But of course i would like Aussies to do it, dunno though, cant see it happening.

SA to win.

The SS studio made a valid remark that Duminy is going to have his hands full in this being his test debut. This last 180 odd runs required are going to demand some VERY mature and composed batsmen.

No, one-day-style-quickly-wrap-it-up mentality needed tomorrow.

speed gun

A bit OT but this is the cricket thread. How accurate is the speed gun? I mean is Flintoff really that much quicker than Lee? Having flipped between channels, I noticed Freddie getting up to 151 km/h and Lee only managing 142 ish. Ok it was late in the day for Lee, but there were a few bouncers too which he put his back into to tempt Kallis that barely made 135 km/h. Just wondering..

Gonna be hectic tomorrow. I think SA will do it and JP will contribute, even if it is to hold up one end for Kallis / De Villiers or Bouch. :D

I put my trust in the camera. The factors that would explain Lee's drop in speed are to great (late in the day, haven't been able to get a wicket until at the end, fourth day, sunny and hot ...)

Was thinking the same thing, it was also late in the day for Flintoff, late on his 2nd day in the field actually. I'm sure it varies due to where the speed gun is setup, it cant be in exactly the same spot on every ground

Gonna be a tense day, if Jakes & AB can put on at least another 80 and leave Duminy, Boucher & co under 100 to get....

COME ON BOYS!!!

We have this match in the bag as it stands at the moment. As long as we don't implode like we did in the first innings again. I cannot see Mitchell Johnson repeating his first innings bowling figures, and he was the only real factor for Aus. My money is on a 5 wicket win for us - Kallis to be there to the end...

We have done very well so far in this test. We must just keep doing what we have been doing, and not do anything silly. Then we will be fine ! There will be huge pressure on us, but there's nothing like silencing the aussies in their own backyard.

Wow, you guys are confident... It will be epic if we pull it off, chasing 414 in the 2nd innings to win the test? Huge if they get it...

I'm not so sure, bloody Aussies seem to fight for every inch and more often that not win by miles... It should be close... Our vulnerable tail is worrisome..

Good century by Smith. Hopefully we can get the 187 runs needed for victory. If we do, it will be the 2nd highest successful 4th innings run chase.

On the bowling side, Johnson already has 10 wickets in this match.

That speed gun is ridiculous. Infact, the way they determine the speed is a joke. Instead of taking the time from the point of delivery to the time it takes to reach the batsman and calculate the speed, they look at the point when it leaves the bowler's hand and when the ball first hits the ground. That's why you'll see a lot of the time that when bowlers bowl bouncers, it actually will indicate a faster speed, because logically, it you bowl a bouncer, it's over a short piece instead of the whole pitch, so the speed will be quicker. So theoretically speaking, you could bowl a very good bouncer which maybe is only around 110 kph, but they will tell you it's 150kph. Infact, most of the actual speeds of the fast bowlers are hardly ever over 120kph in real speed.

Anyway, I was disgusted with South Africa;s performance so far. First, they throw away an amazing opportunity to score 400, then when they had AUS 167/7, they let them get 300. Absolutely disgraceful. They should have bowled them out for 180. This match should have been over already. Pathetic. Let's see if they can manage 60 runs a session tomorrow and win the match.

The commentators mentioned today how the speed gun generally measured speeds

It measures how long it takes the ball to pass through about a metre of space just after the bowler releases the ball, and that bouncers show as slower due to them being bowled at a more downward/diagonal angle which takes longer to pass through that metre, while full balls show as quicker

JK is key. If he bats till the end we will win. If only ashwell was fit , I would be very confident then. Also the fact that we can't rely on the tail for any runs is a big disadvantage.

I am confident that Jk,AB,Bouch and JP will get us home.
