Cricket: Test Cricket

The commentators mentioned today how the speed gun generally measured speeds

It measures how long it takes the ball to pass through about a metre of space just after the bowler releases the ball, and that bouncers show as slower due to them being bowled at a more downward/diagonal angle which takes longer to pass through that metre, while full balls show as quicker

That's totally incorrect. In actual fact, no bowler has really bowled the speeds as they indicate today. Although I have seen a 151kph full length Brett Lee delivery once.

oh well, think it was Mark Nicolas that said that

The fastest i've watched was Allan Donald & Franklin Stevenson bowling for Free State against Natal around 15 years ago. Natal came out to bat late afternoon and those 2 let rip

Off to bed now, early morning tomorrow

We need nearly 50 runs a piece from each of our remaining "recognised" batsmen - when you look at it that way, it's a taller order than it seems at first. Usually a team 3 wickets down could chase 200 runs - but this really is a lengthy tail we have - the batsmen need to shine tomorrow and I agree, Kallis will be the key.

I expect to see the Aussies pitching them up full and wide'ish in the morning in the hope that he edges one. He plays the short ball too well. I reckon they'll target AB with the short ball and hope he gives in to playing a loose shot, as he sometimes has a tendency to do with the short ball.

The explanation makes sense to me. Aktah's 160km/h ball was a low full toss.

We would expect bouncers to have a lower speed anyway, regardless of the method of measurement used because once the ball hits the pitch, it loses pace.

Which explanation makes sense to you? I'm not sure if you meant what I said or what you read elsewhere?

Anyone notice that when we needed 98 to win they put "RSA WIN!" under the score, obviously preparing for it :p

We so close now, I can taste it

I love listening to the channel 9 commentators when we doing well, showing all sorts of old scorecards of collapses

Its amazing the way they talk about "mental strength" of the South Africans when we close to beating them. They think we going to choke.

Sorry Super Sport, but right now the commentary to listen to is the Aussie one, they are squirming. :D
