Cricket: Test Cricket

Hah McKensie failed AGAIN!! If this doesn't rule him out for home series then i dunno.. I won't be surprised if gibbs opens again(esp in cpt). Hoping Smith isn't out of home series.

I think now it rests on Kallis.. he is the most senior batman. You cannot rely on devilliers, duminy, amla, boucher to score beyond their avg or 50 as they aren't as experienced? as him. Also smith out is HUGE blow as he usually contributes quite a bit via presence alone instead of e.g. kallis going his happy place in his head while wickets tumble on the other end.

May i ask what experience means right now? We need to go out and score at 4-5 to the over, if anything kallis will block 9 of 10 deliveries he receives instead of attacking most deliveries, this is not the time for a kallis 100 off 350 balls. This is a time for a fast duminy, de villiers 100 and a 6 hitting boucher innings. We need to reach their score by end of play tomorrow. We could really do with a 400-450 run day :), in 90 overs i don't think that is to much to ask :).

If we are to reach their score by end of play tomorrow then we need to score 320 in the day so not sure where 400 - 450 comes from. I'm sure the team will try and get 350 runs in the day as a minimum. It would still leave 2 days to get some sort of lead and bowl them out. Sensible considering Smith won't bat again.

Going for 450.... I don't think so. Could someone check if the dominating Aussies of the past ever managed 5 to the over for 90 overs?
It's so risky too, if we go for 5 to the over and we come unstuck by being 120 or so short and bowled out for 300, it will make our second innings interesting... 9 batsman and all. And remember, we need to avoid the follow-on still, so can you really see the guys going guns blazing at 5 to the over?

Stranger things have happened in this series. We're in a better position than we were at the end of the second day in the second test.

If we're ever going to score 5 per over for a day against the Aussies, it'll be in this test. Their bowling attack has just eighteen tests between the four of them - Morkel, our least experienced bowler has fourteen by himself. (I'm not suggesting that no. of tests is any kind of measure of threat, just that this is an inexperienced attack that could be easily upset.)

That said, what killa is asking is a helluva ask.

But we're 2-0 up in a three test series - I'd rather see them go all out for a win, than settling meekly for a draw. 3-0 would be an astounding achievement, there's no difference to me between 2-0 and 2-1 at this stage.

are we talking about the same kallis who is on a S/R of 70 in this innings?

The way to win this test (though possibly unlikely) is to bat till around tea on day 4 with the hope of a lead of around 200-250. That way it's the aussies who have to face a day 5 pitch while under pressure not to lose wickets.

Um yeah, that means a first innings score of 650-700? Without our top batsman?

Good plan.

hadn't seen smith was out for 6 weeks.

much like it seems you missed (though possibly unlikely)

i've been reading this forum on my cellphone over the last 2-3 weeks, but aren't you (chiskop) the person who had the least belief in this thread previously. i am not saying 600 here we come, but I can't see why at 125/2 we can't believe that after 1 and 3/4 days we can't approach 600+.

Nope. I wasn't on the forum until after the second test.

I have been amazed by some of the fight-backs in this series, but I do think 650+ without one of our openers is a tad optimistic.

I reckon SA will try for a first innings lead of up to 50 or so, although that will be tough. We'll see how it goes with the cracks on that pitch today...

right-o. but i still think my post made it clear that how i thought the test could be won was unlikely. especially since i specifically state it is unlikely.

ok the cracks in the pitch lead me to believe a 200 kind of lead is actually extremely unlikely.

The cracks look ominous for any batsman. Amla looks a little tentative going forward now and that's not a good sign. I'm really shocked that the groundsman has dished up such a shocking pitch which was keeping low from day one already, and by day 3 has 2 cracks from one end of the pitch to the other - and at Sydney of all places as well...

yep that makes a draw the most likely result if our players don't fsck up.

ah we ae now looking to save this test with ab being run out.

we seem to be doing our series win thing.

EDIT: I would say the umpire should not have given Amla out. It's not a shocker, but I think there is enough cut back and height to make the decision a tough one. And the tracker shows at best clippint the top of the leg stump.

Although the JP decision should possibly have gone the direction of the aussies. but with no referral i do think the umpire had enough to ask questions about whether it would hit
