Cricket: Test Cricket

The series will go down as probably one of the great tours in a long time. Well done to the boys for a great series.

To Smith you have earned my respect. It's going to take a lot from the captain that will take over your reign to fill your shoes.

dissapointing but at least we won the series :) that should keep me happy untill the return leg :) im very worried about the ODI series...our ODI sqaud is a bit suspect ... and im looking forward to seeing gibbs bat again, i think he has a point to prove and im pretty sure he going to give the aussies hell ! :)

Wow what tension... I've lost all three remaining hairs I had :D

Woke up 3 times this morning and checked cricinfo on my phone.... when it was Steyn and Harris at tea I decided to leave it. Got in the car this morning just as Smith came out to bat.... each ball bowled....arrrgggg I still don't know how I got to work without taking a few cars out

If there was ever doubt as to Smith the captain, the player and well .. the man... I say take that you lot! He just had VERY expensive treatment in Melbourne and now?? Hope he will still be ready for the home series. I'm so going to try and get tickets for CTN :D :D

p.s. reading through the posts this morning, amazing, like I experienced it all over again....just one thing, Ntini was the one who actually survived and didn't get out like most were predicting :p

my thoughts exactly !

what a series, and maximum respect to Smith, thats they way test matched should be played, never say die attitude and fighting nail and tooth(and finger in this case) to the very end.

cant wait for the return series and im definitly getting my ticket

I didnt even watch a single ball being bowled:(
Cant wait to see them here!

Here's a comment from an Aussie i thought summed it up quite nicely:

"Never really rated Smith, whinging to mags about Australia's sledging, his arrogance out here four years ago. But it was like he was a different bloke in this series, more relaxed, batted beautifully, and the balls to bat out there today, I've batted with a broken finger and it's not pretty I couldn't imagine batting with a broken hand against blokes bowling around 150k's, couldn't respect the bloke more, I've done a complete 180 on the bloke."

Smith will go down as the greatest South African captain of all time. Can't wait for the return leg..

smith is a proper captain, leads from the front and he just inspires everyone around him, same as John Smit, they are the guys that can squeeze out the extra 10% that is needed from every player and maximum respect to him, he could of just said sorry I can't bat my hand is proper fskd and people would have not asked any questions but he knows the importance of the team effort and it just shows all the players that he's willing to give it all and so should they

lets open up a can of worms :) past mistakes aside (yes i do realise that there are huge mistakes) who would you choose as your best captain (if you could) HANSIE or SMITH,
if you could choose a dream SA side would hansie feature ? my answer YES!
i loved hansie, i hated what he did but loved the way in which he led the SA team... (contridiction there i know :) )

I would not ever pick that cheater in my side, ever period. Smith is the superior player by a long long way anyway.

Did he actually cheat? Having watched the movie it seems that he accepted the money but didn't actually go through with it.

Well cheating implies gaining an unfair advantage. AFAIK he may have underperformed in return for the money. But fixing a match to win a game would require the the consent of the opposing captain/players, which would make them just as guilty.

The movie was produced with the help of his family. His brother wrote the script. Hardly going to paint him in a bad light.

I would choose Hansie too. Great and inspirational captain. SA's record under him was impeccable!! Graeme hasn't finished yet but by the end of his reign he could well be the greatest ever...

As far as Hansie's crimes are concerned, personally I think the punishment meated out to him in the form of the public humiliation at the commission of enquiry as well as the life time banning were extreme. I know of murderers who have gotten off with lighter penalties.

The only crime Hansie IMO was guilty of was being a great captain an inspirational captain a hugely entertaining and competent cricketer with an incredible work ethic. I miss him. Oh and he did sell information pertaining to team selection and pitch reports... So bloody what?!! The Proteas enjoyed a ODI win rate of over 85% under his captaincy. That's unprecedented. Are we to honestly believe that he contrived to throw matches??!! Nonsense!!!

hansie was a great captain and watching the proteas under him was awesome, I think he got punished far to severly for what he did, but I suppose he betrayed the trust of a sport mad nation and it could only go that way.

smith is rapidly moving up the list of great captains and at 27 he may very well finish at the top of the pile as a great captain and one of SA's best batsman.
