I am not sure if there is a thread or discussion on this but i was watching some detective program tonight and they had an episode on it, i thought most likely some BS they made up but it seems it's not BS.

Does anyone know if this drug is available in SA?

apparently it's patent ran out so the drug companies ditched it because there is no money in it and they push another drug called methadone to help addicts.

Very interesting.

You were watching Law and Order SVU methinks. Very interesting stuff. I wanted to start a thread about it after I watched SVU and looked into the stuff on Wednesday, but just never got around to it.

There seems to be a fair amount of corroborating evidence in its favour. There's even a South African group dedicated to ibogaine therapy - I wonder what their experiences are?

The stuff sounds trippy in a good way. I'd give it a shot just for the hell of it. The introspection aspect sounds intriguing...

LOL yea it does sound rather interesting in terms of recreational use, yea it was law and order they normally don't push BS like the csi rubbish our channels are flooded with so i thought let me check it out and wow i was amazed.

I knew drug companies were bad to the bone but wow this is shocking.

Basically the way our society works is they put money before cure that is why i still reckon things like cancer are far too lucrative to cure but maybe my tinfoil hat needs to be put away on that one :D.

Yea that support group would know if it works, i wonder where you can get it from in this country?

Coming back to your drug legal thing copa, imagine if this drug does what they claim. Addicts clean in 24 hours could seriously help  well opiate druggies anyhow. I was reading up on methadone and it is really not that effective in getting someone clean but it makes the drug companies plenty money.

It also helps with methamphetamines and other drugs... if this thing works and available here in SA... then

Ibogaine does not cure opiate addiction. It has been around for a while and has a very low success rate. The initial feeling of not wanting to use anymore fades pretty quickly in the overwhelming majority of users. I know people who have used it. That said it is still worth a shot but there is no simple cure for opiate addiction.

Yea methadone is really not the answer yet they push it.

It may not cure everyone but it does help 100% of patients according to that link :D.

They were talking about this on Carte Blanche last night, seemed like it could work well with the proper support in place. Their is a clinic in Durban that administers it to addicts and provides counselling, therapy etc.

Hmmm I will get flamed for this, but if people in general don't have the willpower to take the fight to the addiction and beat it the hard way they will most likely just relapse. The exact same thing goes for dieting and abs, you name it.

You won't get flamed for having an opinion but put your flame suit on just in case.

The trouble dude is the withdrawal process is painful, it's not like nicotine where it is uncomfortable. Judging from what i have seen it is a living hell for 2 weeks. Imagine the sickest you have ever been in your life and then imagine being that sick for possibly two weeks with nothing that can really help you.

I understand your point regarding will power but when your body is physically sick and in pain i think anyone's will power can be tested.

The relapse rate is extremely high with heroine but only in the first phase of quitting, after that as you mention your will power comes into play but if we had something that could help those first few days or weeks the success rate would go through the roof.

Was ibogaine made legal in South Africa?

That's just silly nonsense. Humans use, and rightly so, all manner of things to assist them in achieving something.

I know that you can go on a tour where you take ibogaine. There is a strict diet that you have to follow for 2-3 months before the tour etc etc.

I was thinking of doing it with some friends some time before I reach 30. The part I am interested in is the introspective part.

If you do do it, be sure to let us know how it goes, I'd be fascinated.

If I do I promise to create a full account of how/what/where :D

Only problem is that it is a 12 day tour if I remember correctly and explaining to my gf why I am going to amazon to go take drugs might be a tad hard as she is not a hippy :p

Blocking receptors does not solve the underlying issue that caused the drug problem in the first case. There are no quick fixes for life.

Methadone strikes me as a puritan way to deal with a heroin problem. All the addiction with none of the high.

If it helps someone then I'm all for it.

Sounds like a shopping mall for drug users.

Interested to hear RiaX's opinion on Ibogaine. He's been pretty vocal in the past about drugs and does seem to have a fair smidgen of education in the pharmaceutical side. Also, I'm still intrigued as to whether or not it really works.

These guys in SA claim it works and pubmed has some fair research on the drug, one linking it to heart arrhythmia. Curious to see if anyone has more info on the stuff...
