Current ISP useless. Need help choosing new one. Join in the fun!

I'm rather late to the party here, so please excuse what I'm going to say next.

I always facepalm when I see threads with content like "I am leaving AfriHost because they're so [bad words] and I'm getting throttled / shaped, who should I go with?", only to find out that they've (like you) have had a home uncapped product.

Home uncapped = guaranteed shaping. It's general knowledge. You're getting what you (and others) are paying for. I cannot understand why people expect miracles with those home uncapped products.

You will have trouble with every ISP if you only plan on going with a basic uncapped account - I bet you'll get shaped with CrystalWeb on their uncapped account (Not the unshaped one, obviously). Some premium / business accounts are even shaped / throttled if you do too much damage (Mweb / WebAfrica) - but not AfriHost, and I can vouch for that.

I have AfriHost 2Meg business. I've had it for yonks, and I don't plan on moving soon. Bundled with my line, it costs R497. I see CrystalWeb are like R50 cheaper, so I'd only suggest trying them out because of that.

I am not attacking your taste in ISP's, I just strongly disagree with your empty reasoning when it comes to the AfriHost hating :)

Correct. But we only apply shaping after specified usage of an account, and then only to large downloads, so your account performs incredibly well no matter what time of day or night, and large downloads fly outside of peak as well.

So our "home" uncapped accounts are unshaped by default, then we apply shaping after 100 to 300 gigs of usage, and only to large downloads, which are released from midnight for line speed. It's simple, transparent, and fair.

Our entry level products shape from the outset though and on a stricter basis, so you are absolutely correct in your post. We've long been advocates of customers selecting the right accounts for their needs, which is why we've simplified things as far as possible, and feel an obligation to market our accounts openly and honestly as well. We believe that this balance of user and ISP responsibility is important.

mr_norris, you seem perfectly reasonable and probably with good cause. You've had a great experience with them thus far. Other people, like yours truly, have not. I was with afrihost last year for about 6 months after leaving openweb not being happy with them or their support. I was super flippen happy with what i was getting for my 2mb, uncapped, home dsl. i could download torrents any time of the day no problem. Now, having moved into a new place, for the past month i get nothing except 50kb/s ANY TIME OF THE DAY unless i do a lot of coke and stay up till 1am. So yeah. it's not 'empty' - i just didnt feel like i had to bother explaining myself - because really whats the point other than satisfying those left in doubt?

K, peace

To each his own. Personally I always facepalm whenever I see people try to defend Afrihost. What exactly are you gaining from it?

I didnt expect miracles. I signed up with Afrihost when they were still an IS reseller. It worked OK, but not great. After Afrihost moved over to being an MTN reseller instead, Afrihost went seriously downhill. On good days I got 1/16th the speed I paid for. On bad days... Well, you do the maths.

When I'm paying R500 per month for an ADSL connection, I expect it to be faster than a 33k6 modem. Afrihost wasn't most days.

I ended up moving over to Mweb. They do throttle torrents during daytime, but everything else works fine with them. And they're much cheaper than Afrihost. So apparently Mweb can deliver miracles, as you put it?
