Eish. I'm jinxed. But cured.
I'm a Joeys guy and therefore a S.Tvl / Lions supporter, obviously. Even after moving to the WCape four years ago, I remained loyal to the Lions, through all the pain and shame of the lean years, even when they were dropped from SupeRugby for those Southern Spears. Pub nights in the Cape are lonely times for a Lions supporter, maybe even back in Joburg.
Recently my wife's attitude has hardened and she's hinted at curtailed consort if I don't get with the programme and start supporting Province. Local is lekker, she says, even though she likes it when I talk foreign. Women, really.
Anyway, pressed and pressured from all sides, and not keen to forgo the use of marriage, I last week relented and mumbled audibly to the rugger gang that I'd support Province in the Final.
It's been a dreadful week. I've had to audibly verbalise to at least fifteen people that Province has my backing. This had made the Westcapers think I'm a one of them even though I still say Cape Town instead of Cairp Tone. I've also worked hard at suppressing feelings of betrayal and remorse with chocolate and beer.
At least I'll have the novel experience of supporting a winning side - something a Lions supporter barely remembers - because last year's winners are playing at home.
Well, to cut a long story short, I'm back to being a Lions supporter.
Thanks, Sharkies, for bringing me to my senses! Well done, I say. Well done!
