CD Projekt Ransomware Hack Severely Disrupts Work on Cyberpunk Updates

CD Projekt SA said Wednesday it will delay a promised update to the much-criticized role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077, pinning the blame for its slow progress on a recent security breach. What the Polish publisher didn’t say is that most of its employees have been locked out of their workstations for the past two weeks, according to people familiar with the matter.

The work stoppage is the result of a ransomware attack disclosed on Feb. 9. The extent of the disruption, which hasn’t been previously reported, poses a major setback to CD Projekt’s attempt to rescue a game in desperate need of repairs.

CD Projekt has said it refused to pay a ransom to the hackers. As a result, employees remain unable to log onto the company’s virtual private network, making it impossible to access the systems and tools needed to do most of their jobs, said the people, requesting anonymity because they weren’t authorized to talk publicly.

Although some CD Projekt employees are working from the headquarters in Warsaw, the majority are at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. CD Projekt didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Despite the unplanned vacation, the hack has been a nightmare for employees. The invaders may have had access to their personal information including Polish identification numbers and passport details, leading the company to tell staff to freeze their accounts and report the security breach to relevant parties, said the people familiar with the matter. Workers were also asked to ship their computers to the company’s IT staff to be scanned for malware or other intrusions, the people said.

Since Cyberpunk 2077’s unsuccessful release in December, CD Projekt has been working to improve the game in hopes of spinning a redemption story. One software patch, released last month, focused on bugs and stability issues. The next major update, which was previously expected to arrive this month, is now slated for late March, the company said.

It seems they are suspecting that the vulnerability existed within their ecosystem, perhaps an employee or an employee or more party to the hack alongside a possible external group. Going by what I am interpreting through this article it is indicative of CDPR not knowing how their ecosystem was breached or is certain thereof and to which extent their ecosystem is still or may be vulnerable. They are trying to discover any possible attack vectors, and by doing so also hope to discover the party behind the attack. Asking your staff to ship their computers for analysis is a process of eliminations, they will be doing more than simple malware scanning.

The happy go lucky, super support for the company steam comments on the delay makes me want to puke.

They got CDPR's floppy penis so far down their throats it is a miracle they haven't all died from asphyxiation.

It's the same everywhere, these idiots deserve being fed crap.

Finally picked up this game via GoG for R450, installed, not played yet. Waiting for 1 or 2 more updates :D

I don’t think you need to wait for updates to be honest. At least in my experience. I’ve had one crash, a few bugs but nothing game-breaking or even particularly immersion breaking.

Thanks, will definitely check it out soon then :)

Same here. A couple of crashes while driving and that's it. That too on Series X running the One X version of the game. PC version should run much better...

‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Is Nominated For A BAFTA It Actually Deserves

The phrase “BAFTA nominated game Cyberpunk 2077” may not really jive with the current status of CDPR’s broken release, but it’s a real thing that’s happened. And honestly, I don’t disagree with at least one category Cyberpunk 2077 is nominated for.

Cyberpunk received BAFTA nominations for Artistic Achievement and Narrative, but it’s the two vocal performances it got nominated I wanted to focus on, Cherami Leigh as Female V in Cyberpunk 2077 and Carla Tassara as Judy Alvarez in Cyberpunk 2077.

Now these are awards I think it’s worth nominating Cyberpunk 2077 for, but with special focus on Leigh’s performance as female V.

For once I agree with Paul Tassi, still tough competition. Female V (Cherami Leigh) deserves it, the male V and... Johnny Silverhand was mediocre, the more I think about it Nicolas Cage would have made a better Silverhand.

TLoU 2 got 13 nominations!!!

When is the next big patch coming out, was supposed to be in feb but got delayed and we're in mid march already.

It is a big CDPR month. They have their earnings call, IIRC, on the 31st where they usually also make big public announcements.

I believe the patch will drop on that day or a week earlier to give assurance to their shareholders. The PlayStation Store is their boogeyman and that need to be remedied.

I do expect to turn the public's attention to a new development, and we may even ses planned Cyberpunk 2077 content cancelled.

Patch 1.2 may be the last big patch, and do take under consideration how minor patch 1.1 was dressed up as a big update.

Without a DLC road map or a season pass I don't see any real big patches.

It is best to wait to see how this turns out, however, since Take-Two is rubbing it up with CDPR it may be a sign that CDPR is a acquisition target.

Being positive I hope patch 1.2 will be worth the wait.

I've pretty much resigned this to No Man's Sky status, i.e. had a lot of fun with it at launch despite being a bit of mess and will ignore any new patches/features/DLC until such time as everything is in it's final state before I pick it up again.

Hopefully it does improve as much as NMS did.

Which took what 5 years?

Which took what 5 years?

CP2077 is a single player experience, its extensive modding scene which is appreciated and its source code being leaked will in any case invalidate a PvP multi-player component. For how long do you support a single player game? 1-year, 2 years with expansion DLC?

As per the current DLC page,

https://www.cyberpunk.net/en/dlc

Free DLC will start hitting night city in the coming months.

I do think the game will receive The Witcher 3 like DLC which includes cosmetics and QoL improvement, but I also think that CDPR is going to cut back on expansion DLC, no season pass quality drops.

They are going to announce their new AAA title or IP. CP2077 is going to end up like Anthem.

Unless their woes turn into a Take Two acquisition, then perhaps… Why else would Take Two care about CDPR? Did you guys see how many new games Take Two slated to release in the next 5 years? 93!

Take-Two plans to release 93 full titles in the next five years

Of those, 47 are expected to come from existing franchises, while 46 are new IP

On today's Q4 and fiscal 2020 financial results call with investors, Take-Two president Karl Slatoff said that it expected to release a total of 93 new titles in the next five years across both internal labels and outside development studio partners.

Breaking it down, Slatoff said that 63 of these titles would be core experiences, including 15 platform extensions of existing titles. 17 would be mid-core titles, and 13 would be considered casual games.

Additionally, 47 would come from existing franchises and 46 would be new IP. 72 are planned for some combination of console, PC, and streaming -- with seven of these also available on mobile -- and 21 would be specifically for mobile.

67 of these titles would be paid games, while 26 would be free-to-play.

63 core titles... ambitious.

Back on topic.

Generally, I don't believe that CP2077 will provide me with any replayability. Nothing new is being discovered what I haven't already discovered. I believe I now have 103 hrs in total and I cannot do any more completion. Will game mode plus change it, no, because I can already achieve such an experience with readily available mods to tinker a plus experience. Will they remedy the console situation, yes, and that is where they will be allocating their 'supplementary' resources whilst they move on with their business. No, the title won't be serviced. It is the modding community which will service the title.

I am in the opinion that CDPR will make new Cyberpunk 2077 stories in a new Cyberpunk game, 10 years or so. Until then, they will work on a probable new The Witcher title and on a new unnamed IP or, so I assume.

Doom, starcraft, diablo? Quite a few titles that enjoyed support well past their due date and still does.

imho fix your **** before you expand, but that is the developer in me talking.

I wouldn't be surprised but I can't see CDPR going there yet.

There's a reason HBO Max imho is better than netflix usa. Quality over quantity.

It will however go the route all these 'dead' titles goes. The community will keep them going just like with vampire masquerade blood lines 1 or hellgate london one way or the other. At this point it would be better if CDPR just opens it up to the public. (but they did this already didn't they. *rolleyes*)
