DA took WC with 51.33%

Well it looks like it's on the cards for a DA an ID coalition;

In any case, De Lille is at least open to offers from the DA as far as participation in the Western Cape government is concerned. "I never said I only wanted to be premier or nothing," she said. Adding that if an offer came of a provincial ministry "I will sit down and consider it."

De Lille on the future of the opposition parties.

I think they, the DA, ID & COPE, must form a coalition together, as timgaul pointed all these parties have the expertise to run a succesfull local government.

What will they call themselves? People that voted for COPE this time around wont support them if the merge with "whites" or am I wrong? Also if the DA change their names they might loose a lot of votes, a party is like a BRAND (Like the ANC says) The ANC brand is very strong, the DA brand is getting stronger and stronger...

If COPE and DA merge and make one party still called DA, they might get some COPE voters but a lot of them will fall back on the ANC, meaning more votes for the ANC again?

I agree, it's a catch 22 situation. If you merge what do you call yourself? Will those who voted for you still vote you?

Maybe create an alliance rather than a merge. Keep your own identity for Provincial elections, but run as one on National elections?

I don't see the benefit in merging tbh, it'd make more sense to continue as individual parties each with their own support base and then form coalitions after the elections where necessary.

Now this is the truth. In the WC no, but you might pull COPE on the boat in WC in return for a coalition in another province with COPE. That should make it pretty feasable :)

Is there any other province where the ANC got less than 50%?

Same here. I wish to see DA, COPE, ID continue as separate parties. They can all share common policies and goals but I worry that merging would result in development of internal fights and loss of focus.
