Datsun Go! Thoughts

Datsun is celebrating its fifth anniversary in India and to mark the occasion, it has launched the 'Peace of Mind' package.

The package includes a 5 years / unlimited km extended warranty on the redi-GO, GO and GO+. The warranty covers the engine, AC compressor, ECU, alternator, shock absorbers and other components.

In addition to the warranty, the 'Peace of Mind' packages also includes 1-year free insurance, free roadside assistance with facilities like 24x7 customer helpline, lost key assistance, fuel assistance, battery jump start and hotel and cab arrangement in case of breakdowns.

Datsun is also offering free pick and drop facility for regular services and special schemes for government employees.

The 'Peace of Mind' package is transferable, in case the owner decides to sell his car.

A Dash of Lux......... more like a tube of KY........

The already-affordable mini powerhouse, which forms part of Datsun’s collection of zippy vehicles, comes fully equipped with a trip computer, power steering, air conditioning, front electric windows, and a USB port.

"Fully equipped" - Bwhaaahaaahaaaa!

Even its sibling stablemate, the Renault Kwid, has a LOT MORE 'fully equipped' gadgets as standard fitment - just not so much for either of them on their NCAP crash test ratings or critical safety tech items such as a passenger airbag, ABS / EBD or ANY other 'driver assistance' features which are NOT included (and NOT even available as optional extras either!)

Datsun Go, Go+ facelift officially revealed

The Datsun Go facelift has been spotted multiple times in the past. Now, the company has introduced the new Go hatchback and Go+ MPV in the Indonesian market.

Dastun-Go 2018.jpg

Datsun-Go_plus 2018.jpg

Both the cars continue to be powered by the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that makes 68hp and 104Nm of torque.

For Indonesia, the engine is available with either a five-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT gearbox. The automatic option is only available on the hatchback and not the MPV.

The exterior changes on the facelift include newly designed front bumper and headlamps. These are the same as those on the Cross, which was revealed earlier, this year.

The front bumper now carries vertical strips of LED DRLs in place of fog lamps and the grill is now wider. The cars are also available with a body kit, which includes sportier front and rear bumpers, side skirts and a large rear spoiler.

Both models also get new alloy wheels and the side indicators are now integrated in the ORVMs.

On the inside, the facelift gets a new 6.75-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. The restyled instrument panel and AC vents in the facelift are similar to the ones found on the Cross.

Both the hatchback and MPV are equipped with driver’s side airbags, auto headlamps and power windows on all doors.

Datsun is expected to launch the Go and Go+ facelift in India later this year. However, it is likely that the manufacturer would skip the CVT gearbox on the Indian variant.

Datsun Go, Go+ facelift India launch in September 2018

Datsun took the wraps off the facelifted Go and Go+ in early May 2018. We can now confirm that the refreshed models will go in sale in India in late September this year in the run up to the festive season.

The Datsun Go hatchback and Go+ MPV facelifts will be identifiable by their revised styling package.

While it is not yet clear if the versions for India will sport the same body kit as the facelift models unveiled in Indonesia, the cars will get reprofiled headlamps and restyled front bumpers with integrated daytime running LEDs.

A different mesh and perhaps even chrome detailing on the Datsun hexagonal grille are also expected. Higher-spec versions of the Go and Go+ will also make the switch to 14-inch alloy wheels; both models get only plastic wheel covers at the moment.

Datsun is said to be striving for a more premium look for its models and the updates should help to that end.

However, it's the Datsun Go and Go+'s cabins that will see the biggest change. The basic dashboard of the current models' will make way for a new dash.

Dastun-Go-interior 2018.jpg

Sure, there will be carryover elements like the high set gear lever and the shape of the side air-con vents, but the larger look is new.

There's a new design for the central vents but taking a pride of place on the new dash is a new 6.75-inch touchscreen. The instruments cluster will also get a revision and will see the addition of an analogue tachometer.

Moreover, the new dash will also get proper lids for the glovebox. The exposed storage bay of the original models drew flak from buyers.

What will also help spruce up the look, will be new front seats. The conjoined bench-like front seats will be replaced by individual chairs for the driver and co-driver.

And with the update, Datsun will also do away with the antiquated pull-type handbrake at the dash and replace it with a more convenient and conventional lift-type unit between the front seats.

The Datsuns will also get feature upgrades with the addition of electric mirror adjust, rear power windows, rear wash/wipe and rear parking sensors. Steering-mounted audio buttons and a defogger are not expected, though.

We have learned that Datsun will also up the safety quotient on these models with the facelift. It is expected that a driver's side airbag and ABS will now come standard, while passenger side airbag will be part of the kit on higher trim cars.

It is not known, however, if the cars will receive structural enhancements for safety too.

The updated Go and Go+ will continue to be offered with the current three-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol engine, mated to a five speed manual transmission.

Datsun sells a CVT-equipped Go in the Indonesian market but it is unlikely to make it to India. AMT versions could be on the cards, however.

The updates will come at a price. Expect the facelifted Go and Go+ to cost anywhere between Rs 25,000-50,000 more than the current models.

At present, the Go costs Rs 3.35-4.26 lakh, while the Go+ is priced at Rs 3.91-5.04 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The move up the price ladder will also bring with it fresh competition from the likes of the Tata Tiago, Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Hyundai's new small car that comes out later this year.

Besides the updated Datsuns, there's more to come from the Renault-Nissan alliance in India. Come January 2019, Nissan will launch the Kicks crossover and later that year Renault will also be out with its new compact MPV.

I dunno why Datsun SA is soo sloooow on rolling out new & updated models vs India & Indonesia.

They clearly doing very well in SA, so bring in the latest ****.

REVIEW: Here’s why the Datsun Go sells huge volumes each month

Datsun has a phenomenal history in South Africa, and its SSS is probably the most significant. The automaker was an affordable and reliable brand, and has returned to SA with most of those same principles.

Take the Datsun Go, it’s one of the most affordable new cars on the market. Despite its dubious safety rating it has become the go-to brand for first-time buyers, especially those with families.

Naamsa figures show sales of 400-plus without fail, each moth. Datsun has added a new ‘Flash’ version to its range as a limited-edition model with a price tag of R138 900.

With a 1.2-litre engine, 55kW and 140Nm, it gets the job done with minimal fuss.

What’s new on the Flash?

What you see is what you get with the Datsun Go Flash; changes to the exterior for includes custom body, bonnet and roof graphics, a silver polished exhaust tip, custom mud flaps, and its available in either white or grey body colours.

Inside, there’s Bluetooth connectivity, auxiliary input, USB radio setup and silver contrast interior accents.

What’s to like?

It’s a basic car though fitted with a driver-side airbag, aircon and its super light on fuel with a claimed combined fuel consumption of 5.2-litres/100km.

My average consumption was not too far off with an average of about 5.9-litres/100km. And, since it’s a small car, with an average-sized fuel tank, R150 can take you well beyond the halfway mark.

It's relatively comfortable to drive and it won't feel like it's going to fall apart travelling beyond 120km/h on the highway. It has a claimed top speed of 161km/h, and is quite capable of overtaking.

It has 1.5-litre bottle holders in the doors and it has a nifty little shelf just below the steering wheel to keep your mobile phone or keys out of sight while driving. It has average fuel consumption readings, follow-me home lights and front power windows - it's a quite a lot of kit for an A-to-B kind of car.

So the Go might be a far cry from the SSS of yesteryear, but it does have connected front seats in a cute little ode to its forebearers, along with the centre console hand brake lever.

I would only ask Datsun South Africa to please fix the rear-view mirror because its dinky ‘Barbie’ toy mirror is not working for anyone and is actually a hazard while driving; it makes traffic and objects look slightly distorted and larger than what they are.

Here’s the thing - it’s not a premium car but the majority of the average-Joe motorist are seeking an affordable option. There’s a big-enough boot, it’s affordable and economical. It really is no surprise why the Japanese automaker has its foot in the door when it comes to an entry-level car.

According to Datsun South Africa, there’s something new headed our way pretty soon. I can’t help to think of the classic Datsuns which roamed the streets of SA. Imagine the automaker re-incarnating the legendary 240 Z Sports or a GX Coupe.

I had to burst my own bubble and look at what’s new internationally, in other markets there’s a funky-looking Redi-Go, an On-Do and Mi-Do, along with a Cross model. My guess would be that it’s one of those.

Lads, the only place you will Go with this Datsun is straight down six feet under.

Datsun has confirmed that the updated GO and GO+ will come with a touchscreen infotainment system, while safety features like ABS and airbags will be offered as standard.

The new models get an updated front fascia featuring a revised front grille and a new bumper with integrated LED DRLs. The cars get redesigned headlamps and dual-tone alloy wheels.

The interiors have also been updated and the centre console now houses a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Both the GO and GO+ will be offered with a list of standard safety features which include ABS with EBD and brake assist, dual front airbags, rear parking sensors, driver seat belt reminder and follow-me-home headlamps.

Both cars are likely to be powered by the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that makes 67 BHP @ 5,000 rpm and 104 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm. The engine is expected to be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Wait what? CP & AA in a Datsun! Nice.

Lets see what the local operation does.

Probably the same thing that Maruti Suzuki has done with all their India-manufactured models destined for SA - rip out the high-end head units and slap in a generic low-end unit instead, like they did with their Swift & Ignis ranges.

Maruti Suzuki Swift - India Specification - High end models:

The Z+ (top) variants of the Maruti Swift get a SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system, which offers smartphone connectivity with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link. Music is played through 6 speakers (including 2 tweeters).

Connectivity is through Bluetooth, USB and Aux. A CD player is missing, but then, who uses CDs today.

The system also comes with navigation (by 'Here') and voice recognition & serves as a screen for the reversing camera.

Maruti Suzuki Swift - India Specification - lower end models & also Suzuki SA specification models:

Z & V variants get a basic 2-DIN music system with Aux-in, USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

2017-maruti-swift-31.jpg

Then there's the Maruti Suzuki Ignis:

The Alpha (top) variant of the Maruti Ignis gets a tablet-like SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system, which offers smartphone connectivity with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link. Music is played through 6 speakers (including 2 tweeters).

Connectivity is through Bluetooth, USB and Aux. A CD player is missing though. The system also comes with navigation and voice recognition & serves as a screen for the reversing camera.

Tablet-like 7-inch touchscreen is placed high on the dashboard - this means that the driver does not have to look too far down to glance at the screen. It looks weird - like something that was pasted on in the aftermarket. No chance of fitting aftermarket HUs here.

2017-maruti-ignis-52.jpg

Ignis Delta and Zeta variants (and all Suzuki SA models) do not get a touchscreen system. Instead they come with a basic audio system that looks terribly out of place as it's made to fit into the same slot as the Alpha's larger touchscreen. The unit does support Bluetooth, USB, Aux and gets a CD player. The Delta gets only 2 speakers.

Updated Datsun Go confirmed for SA (with ‘extra safety’)

Back in May 2018, the facelifted Datsun Go was revealed in Indonesia. Now we can confirm that this updated version of the budget hatchback is due to arrive in South Africa in mid-November.

The local arm of the Nissan-backed brand says both the Go hatch and Go+ seven-seater will boast “extra safety”. This leads us to believe Datsun may finally offer its little hatchback with ABS. There’s also the chance a second airbag will be added (the current derivatives feature a single airbag; the airbag-less base model was quietly removed from the local range at the start of 2018).

Interestingly, the refreshed versions of the Go and Go+ recently launched in India (the country that supplies Datsun SA with stock) come standard with ABS with EBD, dual front airbags and rear parking sensors.

The mid-cycle update will bring fresh front (now with integrated LED daytime running lights rather than foglamps) and rear bumpers as well as redesigned headlamps. The side-mirrors, meanwhile, are set to gain integrated indicators.

The Datsun Go in the press images above is wearing a body kit that adds more aggressive bumpers and a rear spoiler. Whether this option will be offered locally remains to be seen. Inside, the Indonesian- and Indian-spec Go gains a new seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system as well as an updated instrument cluster and redesigned air-conditioning vents.

While the naturally aspirated 1,2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine is carried over (still delivering 50 kW and 104 N.m to the front wheels), Datsun has added the option of an “Xtronic” continuously variable transmission for some markets (a five-speed manual is still the standard gearbox).
