debian installtion process halts

Try doing a check on the disc image you downloaded using MD5 and compare it to the one on the site and see if the download maybe was corrupted.

Other than that I'm not sure, I wish I knew more about linux :)

EDIT: It looks like you might be using a VM, are you sure that the guest os has access to internet (you will need internet access if using the minimal iso install)

When you install and you're at the welcome screen of the install, look around for options, try turning one or 2 off at a time and see if it installs any better for you. I can't remember exactly the function but its something similar to acpi or something like it.
 
It may be related to this.

Are you doing a net install? If not, disconnect from the net and try the install.

BTW, why are you installing Etch (v4) instead of Lenny (v5)?
