Dementia is a beatch

This is quite a tough thread to read, man you are in quite a difficult situation and I can't even imagine how hard every day must be. What you are doing most people would never be able to do, I take my hat off to you and hope that you find some reprieve from the frustrations you face daily.

If you do decide that you want to look for someone to help let me know I can reach out to my network and see if there are any care givers looking for something your side of the world. Someone who has experience dealing with dementia patients may be able to get her past only wanting your help.

yeah people don't quite understand what it is like. The best description is a grown adult acting like a 5 year old child temper tantrums the works.

I do get SOME time to my self, after I put her to bed at 8pm I have about an hour for my self, and then i wake up at 5 and have 2 hours of me time. I put my phone on silent but is next to me, so will see when she calls depending what time I can ignore or go see what is going on, some times she has a late night poo, but anything after 10pm has to wait till the next morning, unless it was a messy one.

The one time she called me over 376 times in a span of 2 hours.....absolutely crazy. Had to block the number for a few weeks

reading stories like your @wizardofid makes me wonder if that is what we all end up eventually as,
unable to move, throwing things around at 2AM, making life difficult for those of us trying to live a decent quality of life still.

do wonder though, if some caregiver, or a domestic or somebody else can do this, surely you cant be around 24/7
and how does she even know its not you? I would think they wouldn't care one little bit

Her memory is still very much intact, well long term memory at least, short term memory not so much, much harder to form new memories. It is only with repetitiveness that new memories stick.

If you were to ask her what she ate yesterday or did yesterday, she wouldn't be able to tell you.

But care giver or domestic is out of the question, it is already round R600 for linen savers, r500 for gloves and 1.5k for nappies, that is already a massive drain on the budget.

It's what I would refer to as a labour of love, you give up almost all of you because it is the right thing to do for the person you love, no matter who they become through it. It's heartbreaking though that not more people in your family can make an effort, even once a week to give you some time to recharge.

I saw what you said about them reverting back to 5 year old's my gran is 96 she doesn't have dementia but her memory is very similar to what you explained and she does have some tantrums  She has always been very independent so we managed to find her a facility in the Eastern Cape because she didn't want to live with family anymore. Last week the home called me to let me know that she refuses to wear any of the clothes I bought her because they are not hers and then told them they all assholes! I spent Saturday with her prancing her around to show off the clothes hoping the memory will stick somehow... I've only had a small taste of what you are going through and can really empathize.

I like that you share your experiences, the truth about what life can eventually become for our kids is hopefully going to get some people to put some proper preparation in place, so their kids don't have to go through what you are.

Thanks for the PM. Yeah eastern cape won't work, she would need to go to JHB or the surrounding area as to be close to most family being there.

Do have a place in mind in nigel, which is just north of 10k a month that is subsidized which isn't bad considering it can go up to 30K+ a month at some places.

She isn't ready for an old age home yet. What I am really hoping for is as she declines mentally she should be a lot easier to handle and manage.

Lol she fell out of bed this morning at 5 am and started calling out my name. She said the "slid" out of bed, there was no fighting or aggression. Somehow she crawled underneath the bed. I was more HOW TF did you manage to get underneath the bed.

In the beginning I used to put a mattress blanket and pillows so if she decides to "Slide" out of bed there is a mattress to break her "slide". Will see how it goes and start doing it again if there is a repeat.

We got her a hospital bed a few months back, it is higher and you can manually raise and lower the bed. It was back breaking changing nappies or picking her up or moving her ect. It isn't like I am not setup to take care of her, got a wheelchair in july.
Gloves, liners and all the other stuff you could imagine needed.

I can handle all of that it isn't an issue, dealing with the person it self that is another story altogether, most days are pretty average, it is the days where she can have maniac episodes that makes me want to murder her in her sleep.

But yeah she is in a pleasant mood again, thank god for that, should last a good 2 - 3 days before the next episode, which can last up to 4 days.......usually knackered after that, a lot of fighting and shouting.

I am in a rural area there isn't anywhere I can go to get respite, personally need to figure out a way to get away from the situation, put her to bed, leave her with snacks, and drinks and go for a walk or even just sit outside and have a coffee and ignore her.

Ignoring part is FCKING hard, as she pleads and begs and plays on people's emotions to get her way, need to figure out how to deal with that, in a manner she understands, not right now you have to wait.

I work from home, I am a freelance 3D artist, it is the type of work that requires concentration and no interruptions, where a project normally takes 3 months to do the last project took nearly 7 to do because of this kak.

it is the reason why I have setup a hourly routine, allows me to get work done and the 15-20 minute breaks in between to help her allows me to be focused I get what I need and she gets to move about.

The other problem is she wants to be in her wheelchair most of the time, unfortunately that isn't possible as you need to supervise them when mobile, as they can get up to all sorts of kak when mobile. So twice a day when weather permits I take her outside, around 9am and after 4pm in the afternoon in summer when there is shade and cooler outside. 3 times in winter, morning, midday and afternoon. She usually has lunch outside in the winter sun as it is nice and pleasant.

So yeah you figure out things along the way to accommodate.

From my side I really need to find away to redirect my anger as I do sometimes end up shouting out of pure frustration, which doesn't do anyone any good, I am by no means perfect, I screw up as well letting it get to me............ You just get to a point where your patience gets put to the test and all hell breaks lose enough to make a sailor cower in a corner. That is when I tell her FCk off you are on your own till have have cooled down and ready to deal with you again.

lol so yeah, it ain't sun shine and roses.......I do a lot wrong as well.....But I manage.....

Oh I am paying much cheaper than that, I am getting direct from a medical supplier. I buy bulk which sounds like I am paying more but buy enough for 2-3 months at a time.

Paying around R8.30 a nappy now
R1 for nitrate gloves.
R0.30 a linen saver.

I also got some free linen savers and gloves from a family friend that works at a hospital, these got water damaged or expired, so no longer sterile and unsafe to use in the hospital environment. Got over a 1000 gloves and 400+ linen savers, and got 160 linen savers last month quite cheap, the puppy pee pads is pretty much the same thing it just isn't certified as sterile. Don't need it to be sterile just need something underneath her to make the clean up process easier. The puppy pee pads worked out at R0.30 per pad.

I am sorted out on that front, thanks.

Yeah came to ahead this morning.....Moved my office to the garage, to force her to stick to the routine I have setup that works best for us both.

This new cycle of hers has been dragging on for two weeks now..... I am so fcking tired of fighting and get angry.......Something has to give.....taking that respite part seriously now, I have to for my sanity to prevail..... if it continues I will move back to the outbuilding as well and do a complete separation at night again.

Lol moved back to the outbuilding. Enough is enough.....first opportunity that comes around she is going to the old age home someone else can deal with this shyte now.

Something I noticed now is the constant lying, I don't confront the lying as she will simply deny it, but it has been getting worse and worse the last few weeks.

What gets to me is that constant calling every 10 minutes I made sure to explain I will assist you every hour on the hour then we can move between the bed couch and wheel chair, that fell on deaf ears.

the only thing I can do, is remove my self, it sounds terrible there really isn't any options..........

dudes I am tired I am mentally fcked I just want to poke my head in the sand.....pretty sure I am close to a breakdown. Just collapsed in the chair in the outbuilding............. WTF am I doing .......

My neighbour has early onset Alzheimers. They already have 3 carers on a 24-hour basis. She is 59 and its advancing rapidly

Today this lady escaped and managed to walk 900m and into Clicks Stores. The staff recognised that she had dementia. Luckily she has a Medical Bracelet and one phone call found her address

The carer had passed out in front of the TV and was only woken by the repeated intercom sounds.

The best you can 🤗

The old age home is going to be the best solution to keep your sanity, hope you find somewhere soon that can accommodate her needs.

Yeah don't really care at this point, been nice, friendly tried to accommodate every whim and demand as best I can.......closed the door, headphones on, on full blast now. At 4pm she was in the couch at 5 pm back to the bed, it rained so she can't go outside and currently still raining, 15 minutes the incessant calling started nope she wants to go back to the couch. She knows very well next session is at 6pm.

at 2pm I told please for all that is holy I am mentally and physically tired I can't just leave me alone for a few hours, just don't talk, shout or anything, just nothing, I don't care what it is, it is 32 degrees I am physically incapable dealing with your crap, here is snacks, your laptop, remotes, glasses, some thing to drink, something to read, FFS leave me alone, if you keep this shyte up I am out the door.
I can't even remotely explain how draining it is to have to get up every time she calls. I keep interactions as short as possible I don't want to spend time with her, I don't have the strength nor care. I work from home have a project due first week of December due which I am going to miss, the down time I was planning for December till early Jan is nou in sy fkken moer in.... now I have to work xmas because of this shyte.

Extra stress because I only manage to finish ONE project this year where I normally get at least 3 done so money is in short supply and sales are down the shitter with this economy currently.......barely scrapping by....So I have that added stress.
If it wasn't for the money she would have been in a dementia ward 6 months ago.....

The gift that keeps on giving, still bugging me every 20 minutes, for the stupidest shyte.....called me because I need to adjust her pillows, called because she can't find something right in front of her, she somehow lost the ability now to do ANYTHING and everything.... I guess that it is more her wanting to be center of attention wanting attention.

I went even as far to build her a over the bed table, I checked the one's online and they are flimsy, pretty easy to push over, the one i build and welded is next to impossible to push over, heavy and sturdy.

Everything is made 100 times worse as she is no longer able to walk, I don't mind the moving about between couch and chair, I would put her in the office with me, but she has a habit of talking to her self and still bug me, it is distracting for creative work you need to focus for extended periods, I get extremely easily distracted and hard to refocus again.

I need to work in complete isolation to function properly.

Yeah I need to get the whiteboard and markers month end, and start writing down the times and when this or that happens and the date.......

She started getting forgetful a lot more lately, points to things are progressing closer to the next stage she is also getting a lot weaker getting out of bed. But she has to move regularly, to avoid muscle atrophy and things like bed sores and get her bowels moving ect.

This is her first summer in this stage, so everything is still new, winter was a lot better, and she moved around a lot less, but I can't keep up with this pace.......I will fcking die of heat stroke.....

You are in an unenviable situation. My father was taken by alzheimers, so I have an idea, although I, thankfully for me, wasn't as close to it as you are.

The only advice I can offer is to control what you can control and accept what you can't. This will reduce the mental anguish that you experience and give you the energy you need to control your reaction. You have a choice in how you react and feel about anything.

And therein lies your power.

My biggest issue is, I can't just switch off for a, day or two, where you do absolutely fck all, sit on the couch and just watch movies or series. I have been trying to get sundays to my self......Sunday I move her 4 times and that is it....week days 10 - 12 times. and that is already too much.

Recommended is at least every 2 hours.....

In those kind of situations I find it helpful to find a perspective that changes onerous activities into something worthwhile. Not saying it's easy, but it becomes easier with practice.
