@ MsDenz, sexism abounds everywhere, even here it seems
Secondly, we've all admitted that doctors hand out antidepressants like candy, not everone needs them and it's up to the person suffering from depression to make an informed decision whether their depression is serious enough to require them or not.
Lastly, when you refer to people wallowing in their identity as a depressive, and attention and sympathy seeking, you are referring to emo depression. Emo depression is one of the reasons there is so much stigma attached to this illness. People who really suffer from depression are ashamed to seek treatment because of people like emo's who wallow in their depression.
Firstly, let me say that your statement that 'the belief that one can learn to cope with life normally while under the effects of mind altering drugs is ludicrous', is an uninformed one. Antidepressants have allowed many people, including myself, to lead a totally normal life. That being said, I don't intend to live my life relying on antidepressants. They're mostly just a stepping stone to help you on your way to recovery, however some people will need them indefinitely. The absolute undeniable fact is that most diagnosed depressives are medicated. Even if they are receiving treatment, the belief that one can learn to cope with life normally while under the effects of mind altering drugs is ludicrous. The fact is that almost everyone who is diagnosed with depression believes they have a disease which requires medication. How do you tell the difference?
