New World in Menlyn actually has the Panasonic TC-P54Z1 on display. That is the latest flagship model, going for R45 000. Price is actually not bad considering that the RRP in the US is $6000. Of course over there the specials go down to about $4000. The V10 models are basically just as good as the Z1, just not as thin and does not come with the wireless HDMI bit the Z1 has. The 54V10 should be just over half te price of the 54Z1. I think New World also has the V10, but I did not enquire on the price.

I have cancelled my Pioneer KRP500M order until I can go view the Panny's, although I already know that they will not be nearly as good as the KRP500M ( http://www.avforums.com/reviews/27/Pioneer-KRP-500A-50inch-Kuro-Plasma-Review.html )

Pioneer is closing its HDTV business. They were very nice sets but after sometime in early 2010 there won't be any more and hence a short while after that there won't be any spare parts either.

The Panasonic is actually as low as $4200 in some stores, highest price being $5500, however for R45,000 it's not too bad, still terribly overpriced but not as much.

In the US, hardly anything ever sells at the MSRP.

Amazon JP link:

LOL it was ¥452,000 just a month ago, now it's ¥394,800

I see that the V10 is ¥230,000 or $2500

I see that according to Amazon JP there is no 54 inch V10. They do go up to 65 inches though :).

I see the Pioneer you wanted retails for under $1500 in the US, I wonder if they'd sell it for R15K in South Africa? No chance, ne?

The V10 comes in 50, 54, 58 and 65 ...

Some US stores have that 500M for just over 1500, yes. The Amazon price is now 1899 and the safest way to bring one in would probably be Take2. They order it from Amazon and it would currently cost me R28 000 without the stand and R30 500 with, but at least I'll be guaranteed to get it damage free. I won't have a guarantee on it, but there is nothing available in SA for R30K that would even come close to its Picture Quality.

The only 50" available through the Pioneer distributers in SA is still the PDP-508XG for R40 000 ... and I already have that one :D

Which model number? THP54V1? Google does not return any results for that model, only THP50V1, THP58V1 and THP65V1. Amazon Japan does not list any 54 inch models for the V10, unless it's US-market only.

who in their right mind would purchase a TV/panel for $4200+ ??? I'm sorry, but i for one would fall into a deep depression knowing ZAR 35k just got debited off my account.

Im not stingy & I don't count every cent, but gosh - people who splash 35k out for a TV need to see a psychiatrist.. seriously

I mean, how much does panasonic, or whoever owns the factory, spend to actually build/compile the tv.. cost price cant be more than 4.. or 5k tops...

Doesn't that depress you guys knowing you have just actually been robbed?

They are overpriced but some people spend more on some things and less on others, then again some people are very loaded and can afford everything.

A good brand name TV set I think is worth it. It gets used a lot, a good quality picture is nice to have and the Panasonics are probably assembled in Osaka hence the extra expense.

Still I'd prefer a domestic Panny over an export one, who cares if the manual is in kanji, just that the few domestic goods I have are better than export quality in some minor polish regards :).
