DigiChilli Trial Account Feedback/Status/Results

Anyone else put off by the fact that Digichilli only accept debit orders as payment? Doesn't seem to be any option to pay by credit card or EFT.

Hi Guys,

We've gone the Debit Order and Direct Debit route as the Credit Card route has a six month window of liability that Nigerians would love to use while selling uncapped DSL in SA.

The EFT's have a manual intervention which has inherent costs and can cause problems. We may still accept them, but its not our first choice.

Hi Dave

Thanks for getting back. I can accept that credit cards pose a fraud problem, particularly in the South African climate. It should be noted however that there are many safeguards available to companies to combat this.

However I cannot accept that direct debits, which essentially give a company carte blanche to deduct as much as they please from your bank account, are the only acceptable alternative.

As a developer I have worked on many payment systems myself where EFT payment receipts are completely automated. It's not hard to do provided you devise a referencing system for them to use as their recipient reference when they make the payment. If they miss a payment for whatever reason then you simply cut their service off, simple as. I can't see what's so difficult about that.

Furthermore, many people forget that you can set up automated payments from your bank account rather than signing a debit order. Debit orders can and do go wrong. You won't have to search far on this forum for horror stories of people's bank accounts being cleared out by a company messing up a debit order instruction.

There are many people like me who absolutely refuse to sign debit orders. Call us paranoid, call us delusional, call us what you want, but there's absolutely no way I will ever hand over the keys to my bank account to any company or organisation.

Having witnessed the Screamer mess I'm sure they don't want to be a repeat. They should only launch when ready... Although it would be nice if they are ready tomorrow :)

I loaded up Quake Live and connected to an IS server in JHB. The result for me (tested it a few times) was sad and painful to say the least.

At the start all was fine with a ping of 60 but soon it went up to over 400 :0 then it varied between 60 and 360

Been using the account and it has been working well. Except for the fact that the ping times now average about 232

Are those pings international? Local is fine for me but international isn't great yet. Has improved a lot since the start!

Sorry, I should have stated, they are local! The servers are actually in JHB!

International I can't even get it to load properly

WTF is Technically "correct" getting his information from? Even my sister (who barely knows how to switch on a PC) knows what's going on by just reading mybroadband.co.za's news articles.

Seacom between JHB and CPT? Last time I drove from CPT to JHB there was no sea inbetween, so no idea where the sub-marine cable is (sub-marine means under water to those who don't understand what it means)

Ahhh, is that why itsss called "SEA"COM, wow...

Just got the email

We will always make a plan to enable you to have your chillies and eat them too. Whatever it takes.

time outs

Hi Dave,

I have been testing the account from different IP's /locations. Intl browsing and local gaming seems great, except for one problem which i think the international gamers will have is the following:

The account randomly times out pinging to intl servers:

Is there any explanation for this? Is this because of the nature of the "burstable" Seacom link being used?
