Digital TV never promised

The other day while viewing properties I walked through a nice family home where each room had its own TV inside. Apart from the fact that I pity the family for the lack of family time which will result in it, I am wondering, how with these set-top boxes for the digital TV work? Will the set-top box generate a signal which is sent over the antenna's cable? Will it be using standard AV cable (RCA) or S-Video?

Basically, will you have to buy a set-top box for each TV in your home, or will you be able to use a single point of distribution without a "smart" workaround?

I cannot understand how a reputable journalist gets these things bungled up. The SABC is converting from analog to digital, and that has nothing to do with HD which Hahn was talking about. DSTV is already digital, but you have your SD decoder and your HD decoder.

But even if local consumers were not enjoying terrestrial digital broadcasts by 2010 they could still access the newer technology by subscribing to satellite services, he said.

So basically we cannot get HD via the national broadcaster?

Wonderful how a clarification always seems to cover up ineptitude.

even if the had - like i think they did, or at least led ppl to believe - it would be folly to believe them. this is the world-famous DoC we're talking about...

I am sorry Lesley Stones, but please just try and understand what you are writing about before you write it.

"Digital TV" and "HDTV" has got nothing to do with each other. You can have "Digital TV" which is "HDTV" and you can have "Digital TV" which is NOT "HDTV". Please do not use the terms interchangeably, as they are not synonyms.

If I try and understand what you want to tell us, then the headline must be "HDTV never promised". Even though we will/might have "Digital TV" by then (which is what Sentech is doing), we might still get the standard resolution image of the world cup.

Is this correct?

Anything by Lesley Jones and Business Day should be barred, pending a public apology for her article with regards to the Vodacom BEE shares.

It might be true that they never promised us HD TV, like they never promised the high speed train between Pretoria and Joburg (& airport). They have, however, created an impression that those will be offered. This is why the public has an expectation where these are concerned. Bwana is right about "covering ineptitude with clarifications" and putting records straight. These people take us for fools, but again it's the g'ment of today (much like Telkom is working).

Why are so many people buzzing about this whole thing all the time ?

1) No on cares about goverment so why put it inside our TVs? No even visits www.gov.za for any reason other than to see what days are public holidays.
2) No one watches soccer so who cares about 2010.
3) Digital broadcasting in SA will be a disaster, if you look at the poor signal strength of most analog receptions chances are they will be off the digital cliff and will not see anything.
4) The much hyped HD format is a mere 144 lines (25%) more than the current 576 we already have. That is nothing to get excited about. If it was 504 lines (87.5%) more resulting in 1080 lines then perhaps it would be worth while.

So whenever you see an article about Digital TV, Soccer, 2010, HD or whatever don't get your hopes up.

And nobody promised that we'd get cables landing on our shores in this century. Our bandwidth is fine anyway - people just just use the internet less.

I don't give a hoot about digital anyway, analogue seems ok to to me.

"The boxes will cost about R700 each, after the price was hiked by about R400 owing to a decision to enable the boxes to receive e-government services."

AKA "P-R-O-P-A-G-A-N-D-A"

Dear rpm,

Please do an article explaining the ****ing difference between HD and DIGITAL. Make it bright yellow with huge red lettering and make it compulsory for every forumite to read at least once before accessing these articles again.

no you got it wrong, AKA "An excuse why I am setting up my chommie to make a cazilion bucks out of the allready stretched pockets of the SA middel class" is more like it, but then what do I know.

We were never going to, Sentech, ICASA, and the DOC made this clear from the start. They're only going to start thinking about HD once the digital migration is complete. Since HD TV is too expensive for most, they're right in doing so. Digital TV is another thing. You're all right about the article, it is poorly written, the journalist clearly does not understand the difference between HD and digital.
