Digital TV rollout review

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) will ask Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda to review the time frame for the migration from analogue to digital television, officials said on Friday.

Whats new!! We in SA everything always gets delayed.
Myadsl please stop writing soppy stories that makes all of us depresed all the time.

I am just waiting for 2011 or 2013 so that I can cancel my TV license as my current tv is analogue.
I do not need a digital one to watch DVD’s.

Does that mean that as soon as digital TV is rolled out and analog Tv is switched off, that i won't need a TV license for my now obsolete tv anymore?

I am still waiting for Mnet to start with their DTT trial, which I am apart of.

On you on it, as I called Mnet and they said there were problems with the Pretoria area and I should hear in the next week or so.

Oh... Your location is Cape Town in your profile. I don't know what's happening in Pretoria.

I'm not on it, but I am in the trade... Have seen the decoder and picture, as well as measured the signals etc.

So what is the picture quality like....amazing and close to Satellite.....any other info u can give me.

Well it is a digital signal, so yes it is the same as satellite. If the signal is bad you will get digital break-up like with satellite, or a no signal message. You can measure BER and it is actually very easy to pick up with a normal UHF grid antenna. The box looks like a single view decoder.

I am looking forward to the better picture quality as I have a 40" LCD and Mnet's picture is the worst, ETV is not bad.

Why so optimistic Icasa? Try for 2020. Should be reachable for you guys.

looks like the private sector's gotten going with the decoders already(based on above? UEC?).. sure this is gonna mess up state's standards they want to push as a SA standard.(is this sorted even?)

Not sure what the holdup is right now...probably 'competent' ICASA ;)

Does anyone have technical data for Cape Town transmission. Where is it being broadcast from, frequency etc.

I believe the problem is that somebody made a big mistake when they ordered the transmitters. They ordered for a frequency that was not awarded to them and it was then awarded to someone else, who has now started broadcasting DVB-T on that frequency... or so I've heard.
