Digital TV switch on

I have checked the Sentech site and it has no ifo that I can find. But if it gets updated as often as the teletext on sabc2, then we will have a long wait. According to the teletext SABC uses PAS4 satellite and ANALOGUE. Sat signals went digital over 10 years ago and pas4 moved orbit and Pas 7/10 took over. Sorry Intelsat 7/10

the broadcasters, sabc, etv would only get involved on Monday. So lets see what happens tomorrow.

I hate to mention the obvious, but If V3G is correct and there is no transmitter in CT yet, you sure aint gonna have one up and running by tomorrow dude.

And if a city the size of CT still doesn't have one, then who the hell does and what have sentech been doing the last few years in preparation for yesterday? It would be interesting to see a list of what places do have transmitters, and if they are infact transmitting anything.

@V3G can you ask your sentech buddies maybe and post it for us?

Nice to see SA implementing MPEG4 H.264. I suspect that this technology will make it easier to migrate to HD.

Kaizer Kganyago, SABC spokesman, in August claimed that the corporation had no plans to broadcast in HD but this claim is questionable considering the broadcaster bought an HD OB unit a couple of years ago. For now, chances are that they won't be playing around with HD on the DTT service but it will surely be possible after the anologue switch-off...the only exception would be if government decided to auction off the spare bandwidth.

They could not give me a list.

I think SABC are preparing for the migration to HD after analogue switch off in 2011. They already use HD OB units to cover cricket matches.

Seems SABC are getting 4 new HD OB units:

from screenafrica.co.za
In a contract said to be in excess of R350m, Sony South Africa (Pty) Ltd has been awarded the tender to supply the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) with four new fully high definition (HD) outside broadcast (OB) units.

Jess Goedhals, GM of Sony SA's Broadcast and Professional Division, notes that this is the biggest single purchase in the history of broadcasting in Africa. "We are excited and proud to have been chosen to supply Air Time, the SABC's OB division, with additional HD units to add to its existing fleet. Air Time was the first OB facilitator to go digital and upgrade to HD, so this deal will make SABC the largest supplier of HD OB units on the African continent."

Nic Bonthuys, Acting Chief Technical Officer of the SABC, adds: "Due to the huge amount of capital the deal involves, we had to carefully scrutinise all tenders for the best possible package that would meet our needs now and in the future. This historic investment in HD OB units is part of our overall digital roll out strategy. The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa has helped us to fast track this process."

The first two units are due in May 2009, just before the Confederations Cup, with the remaining two arriving at the end of 2009. Bonthuys says: "The reason for this is twofold:we are in negotiations with Host Broadcast Services (HBS) to facilitate the Cup. Their requirements are HD, hence the need for additional OB units by May. Also, delivery of the other two units at a later stage helps us spread the cash flow over two years. The units are wired for 24 cameras, but initially will only be equipped with 18. In addition part of the package includes 10 Sony HD cameras with which to upgrade our Multi-Purpose Units (MPUs) to HD."

The report doesn't say whether SABC's studios in Auckland Park are equipped for HD...them making an HD channel available would also depend on how many local productions are shot in HD...I would think for the SABC it would be useless just broadcasting foreign content in HD.

Anybody still picking up anything on 554MHz? I can still get the channels on 770 but seems they have stopped 554.

Owners of Digital TV (DVB-T) receivers unite

I've created a post here to track digital signal reception, and gather info on which TV tuners work, where they work, and what settings to use.

Please post your info if any of you have been successful.
