Digital TV uncertainty

yes it was just noise no real launch

Do I have to read the article to give an answer to that question...

It was so blatantly just a publicity stunt, and a pretty rubbish one at that as well.

LOL - I love this country :) It gives me something more to moan about everyday :)

Nokia N96

If I live in Durban and have a Nokia N96, should I be able to pick up the Digital channels on my phone? Right now I'm on Umhlanga Ridge and I pick up nothing.

and two other SABC channels which Sentech did not want to disclose.

These would be SABC Entertainment () and SABC News International.

Hey, I pick up the 6 channels loud and clear, as well as 6 radio channels.

I'm in the South of Pretoria (Lyttelton), but not sure which tower I'm getting my signal from. My antenna points Southwest.

Edit: On second thought, it must be the Kameeldrift tower, as that's the only one transmitting the DTT signal.

Wasted my whole saturday scanning for channels!
JHB and Durban, is that a "National Switch-on" ???
All this time and they only have 3 (THREE) transmitters in the whole country! What was all the fuss and fanfare about.

What equipment are you using? I was thinking of getting a digital USB receiver off eBay.

I haven't checked since the switch on, but I was receiving the test signals just fine with a regular old DVB-T card (LifeView Trio, if it matters). There were only 4 channels then, though. 1, 2, 3 and e.

One does have to wonder how much extra effort it is for stations to "invest in the infrastructure needed to broadcast their TV services in digital format", since it has been working for the last several months already.

I have a Compro DTV E900F TV card. It's a bit expensive, but the advantage is it has both analog and digital tuners, two of each.

I get a 100% signal, but when it's windy or there's a storm I lose the digital signal. The DTT signal was also off for most of Sunday and Monday, but like Sentech says it's still just a test transmission. Hopefully the signal will get better as they sort out technical problems.

Any idea what CAM/Crypto they're using, if any?

post confirmation of signal reception

I've created a post here to track digital signal reception, and gather info on which TV tuners work, where they work, and what settings to use.

Please post your info if any of you have been successful.

(RoganDawes and Valis, I see you guys have had some success, could you post your findings as well...)

I can see how this will pan out... you'll have to pay a fee for the DTT, and you'll have to pay SABC a TV license... except now SABC can switch those who only watch ETV or DSTV off...
