Disappearing data doesn’t exist

Data leakage is a technical impossibility and an increase in data depletion is due to a surge in data use, according to WASPA.

“This surge in data usage is behind the data depletion that has generated recent media coverage,” said WASPA chairperson Casper de Villiers.

I have the same problem. Same phone, same contract, same people on my whatsapp chat, nothing different then any other month. (Yes, quite borring). BUT... all of a sudden in the middle of the month my data is finished. Poof, gone.
Spoke with vodacom and all they could say was that they see I use Whatsapp... there's where my data is going. BULL man.

Why don't you monitor usage on the device? If you feel so strongly about it collect proof.

I did... with vodacom's app. Get in the office, say howzit to my boet on whatsapp, then off to a meeting, getting back 10mb is gone.. Just for saying howzit ? Read the link i posted. It's farting against thunder.

And what does your phone data usage stats say?

Monitor usage with your phone and check which app is using the data...?

Android device? Go to Settings > Data Usage then scroll down and see what is using your data. In my case most was Whatsapp using 36.25MB in Feb and second most was Opera Mini at 27.96MB.

OK.... How do I do that ? (I'm not a tech fundi).

Do you know how to use Google? Look in your device's settings. The fact that you have now admitted to not even knowing how to monitor your own data usage just shows how idiotic your belief of disappearing data is.

Bla bla bla... Go troll Zuma's 7th wife.

Google services :p

Updates and syncing and things like that.

AGreed. Thing is, I never changed anything on my phone, apps update at home on wifi, but, after the update they use more data to do whatever they are doing ?

Play store, Google, updates, games, Gmail Syncing etc You cant remove or uninstall the Google services, as you need to have that to use the various apps

Also guys, most if not all of you are quite tech savvy.. Lets be realistic here, unless you completely turn off your mobile data, and/or strictly use wifi, you will consume data in the background if you have a smart phone, whether its Apple or Android. You can individually turn off or restrict which apps uses data.

Some users are shocked when their data goes quickly, but the fact of the matter is, that having a big bundle is key to owning a smartphone. We had a case of use saying they loaded a 250mb data bundle, and it depleted with a few minutes. When asking what they used, was told youtube and facebook.

For that amount of data, you really shouldn't be using youtube or much of facebook if you intend to view images, upload or download images.

Not saying there are not issues and not laying blame at the networks, but, many times the data used is by the individual him/herself. Most apps use data, whether in the background or not, its using data.

Seriously, that we have to worry about such small quantities of data to run the risk of a massive bill

Yip. That is why I have a 1GIG data contract sim in my phone. I hardly use voice calls, and the few that I do make can just be charged for. The rest is all data usage and voip calls.

but i was at a certain conference recently Ockie ;) and the talk was about data consumption, streaming, and the future. Unless they are prepared to have zero rated data packages for these streaming services, i cant see it happening anytime soon, or having people replace their DSL for a mobile package.

I also think that the networks need to start growing a pair, and offer a decent data bundle at a good cost. We cant have 1GB for R149. Its 2017, we should at least have 5 gigs for R149. I had a chat to somebody in the UK, and he mentioned that with a giff Gaff sim, or something like that, they get a 5GB package for around 15 pounds a month. Think that equates to around R230.

Now MTN has 50 gigs for R299 etc on contract, but why do we have to hit a 24 month contract, to make use of a good deal. If we want to move with the times, we have to realistically come up with ways to give the consumer something to be happy about on prepaid.

I am all for cheaper data, but for now I make due with what is out there.

I took out the 1GIG data contract as then you pay cheaper. I am paying R99.00 for mine instead of the R149.. prepaid price. It serves me well.
