Hey guys, new member here. I am having terrible trouble with disconnections on my adsl line, maybe 6 a day. Have a microcom AD2730 Annex A router which is connected to my desktop and it has a Voip Linksys phone adapter for the cheap calls offered by Mweb, has anyone got a clue why this is happening. No warning, just disconnects and then reconnects 20-30 secs later.

Try resetting your router back to default then setting it up again, this can sometimes help with disconnects. If it doesnt and your sure its not coming from your router you can log a fault with Telkom to have your line tested and monitored...

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have tried that several times all with no effect at all, I have also had Telkom test the line and needless to say our monopoly here says there is nothing wrong at all with the connection, but I have not asked them to monitor it! Maybe if they can see I am not talking rubbish and see the disconnections themselves they might find the fault.....

Next time it happens, check on the router if the adsl light is still on or if it's flashing. If it's not on or flashing, then it means that the line is losing sync which means that you are either to far away from the exchange or ther is some interference.

Also wondering, what speed is your adsl connection?

It is important to work out if the problem is the line losing sync or not, by looking at the LED on your router that would indicate a loss of sync. If so, it is very much a local Telkom issue, and an intermittent problem. NOT fun getting it fixed - see some of my experiences here:

Of course, when they do that remote test, the line happens to be fine and you get fobbed off.

It took me 5 or 6 logged faults until I got a competent local tech who has mostly sorted out the problem. Some advice:

1. Insist that it is an "intermittent" fault and get a fault reference - write this down.
2. Bug them daily about the fault reference.
3. When it looks fixed DO NOT sign off the fault with the tech or when they call you - again insist it is intermittent and only allow them to close the fault after a week or so of fault-free operation.
4. The techs often do not understand things like attenuation - nor do I really, but when the tech says you are too far from the exchange because your attenuation is 30-something, insist that ADSL can run at at least 60!
5. Try to get the number of the local techs or their office or manager and bug them.

LOL - one tech even claimed it was because I was "using all the bandwidth" to the local exchange and was being cut off to give others a chance! On my little 384k line nogal!

Good luck!

Thanks for your advice i will try it out with Telkom.

As I am supposed to have a 10Mbs line it only operates best at 8 or lower and if it is at 8 and I do a speed test I get like 6. The moment I put it to 10Mbs it start dropping the line again and again and again. I even got Telkom to put a brand new line from the pole to the house - which I had to wait for , for 5 months , only after threatening them that ill climb up there myself and do it they came out..

Wish me luck!

Try a different router completely (borrow a friends) and see if that helps.

have you checked your line filters?

I brought a new D-Link Router and still the internet light goes off and the dsl light flickers. So the conclusion to be made is I am too far away from the exchange +- 3km to get that 10mbps speed and stable.

I am now with Mweb uncapped 4mbps and yeah so far so good i mean i guess it’s just one of those things we live in Africa not in Japan with its 90Mbps fibre optic cables...
