Discovery Vitality [2017]

Has anyone been able to log steps with a suunto ambit3 ?

It shows steps and I have a stepcounter screen but only works when doing an activity.

Doesn't seem to log daily steps to movescount the suunto app ?

Has anyone had success with the Muvit / igotU HR monitor? I find that I can use it at the gym on a stationary cycle trainer (spinning or watt bike) but as soon as I try and use it for actual cycling (where I am moving and its in my back pocket) it drops signal consistently. In fact I strapped it on as I walked the 8 minute journey from my car to the office this morning and it still drops off. I've used both Wahoo and Polar Beat apps, and neither maintains the link, so I can only conclude its the actually device. I'm also aware of the need for wetting the electrodes, so I don't think that's the problem and the strap is fairly tight. Oh, and the battery seems to die every few weeks. I basically just want to know if there's anything I'm missing, and whether anyone has had better experiences, or if its just a dud and I'll have better luck with a Polar HR.

I eventually also gave up, on replacing the battery every 2 weeks. It worked when the battery was at 100% level, but it seems as soon as battery drop below 95% or something the iGOTu hrm dies, or doesnt work reliably at least.

So I eventually got a wahoo hrm from takealot, but use it on the igotu hrm belt. I dont like the wahoo hrm belt.
I would suggest importing a polar h7 hrm from ebay via AGS. Probably the cheapest way to go with a reliable hrm.

Eish. Thanks for the feedback. Glad to know I'm not just missing the magical HR touch.

Hmm... Both mine and the wife's are still going strong. Battery lasts about 6 months. I used mine for super circuit at the gym initially, but now only doing stationary cycling. I have added other exercises on alternate days though (core training and burpees) and it never misses a beat... even if it slides down a bit as I get sweaty.

I had a cheapie HR monitor, but it was problematic.
I ponied up for the Polar H7 strap/monitor (~1K) and it has worked flawlessly since.

Cheap HR monitor if you use Aramex Global Shopper and need multiple devices. Uses ANT+. Works with S Health. Not sure which other compatible apps it works with. Just got my first 300 point work out today.

Folks, does anyone know what is the simplest/cheapest solution to get a heart rate monitor/device that is compliant/compatible with Discovery Vitality's systems?

Ideally something that reports via the Apple Health app, as that appears to be the easiest, but I don't want to spend so much on an Apple Watch.

Accuracy does not have to be the best, I just want something that can be used from time to time and gets Vitality points.

Has anyone done the new fitness assessment? Would love to know what they actually do. Pretty sure i will fail most of it :(

I would also like to know what is involved for 2017 - I've heard they use a watt bike instead of the stepper - would be nice to go in prepared...

Anyone have details?

HRM belt with Polar Beat app. It's free on Android and IOS. The Polar H7 HRM belt works flawlessly with Polar Beat but is close to R1000 from Sportsmanswarehouse. You can get up to 25% cashback if you buy with your Healthygear benefit.

Edit: The Muvit HRM is cheaper at R449. Not sure if it works on Polar Beat.

Interesting, IIRC the H7 went up in price to between 1.3k and 1.4k mid 2016, but now back to the old price:

Polar H7 Bluetooth Heart Rate Sensor
Code: 1436060
R995.00

Here you go @Tag11, cheap HRM option:

The Muvit HRM is definitely recognized by Polar Beat (which is totally the cheapest way to get points), but for me at least its performance is very iffy. I think it might have something to do with where the receiver is placed - ie. if my phone if in front of me its more consistent than if its behind me (in a cycling jersey pocket). But the battery needing to be changed quite regularly (at least in my case) is really quite annoying.

Yes it does. Has been working flawlessly for the last few months for me.. apparently other guys are having issues though.

Its very easy.
1. A lot of flexibility tests like
- Squat against the wall
- Squat down from step on one leg
- lie down and in fetus position then open arm up to other side
- hands behind back
- lie down on back then lift 1 leg at a time to 90 degrees
2. Step on treadmill to let your heart rate go up, then they check what it is after like 2 minutes or so. Aparently you want this around 90-100 bpm, mine was at 120 or something I still got full points.

Then they also check your blood pressure and stuff and some questions.

Its still very easy to score 5/5. Both me and the wife passed flying colours and we not runners, only go to gym to do strength exercises.

For level 6-7 if you qualify, there are fewer places you can go to, they put an oxygen mask on your face and push your heart rate all the way to 100% of your age related max. At least that is what they told me when I asked about it.

What do these assessments cost?

^^Do they really score you and ward points based on the flexibility stuff?
Yes.

I forgot, they also test you with a pushup, if your back is straight, including for the ladies, no ladies pushup.

Flexibility is out of 2, I lost 1 point for the leg raises.
