Thing is, making an issue out of it every year ensures that society at large remains cognisant of the fact that certain groups' customs and cultures - when taken to the extreme - annoy and infuriate others. Just standing by, hoping for the best, whilst drugging every dog, cat and parakeet you can lay your hands on, would have the opposite effect.

Humanity's culture will homogenise; the faster we can chuck the daft bits whilst holding on to the good bits, the better.

You don't have to lose your culture in order to be more considerate to those around you. Celebrating Diwali doesn't mean you have to fire off the loudest, most disruptive fireworks you can buy.

christians celebrate christmas by singing christmas carols, but you don't see them setting up the largest sound system money can buy and then blasting their carols across the entire town.

The fact that the people in this thread actually expect you to do this should tell you enough about them being trolls. Everyone else has to spend 100s of rands every year so that they can fire off their massive fireworks and satisfy their inner 5-year olds.

Either they're trolls or just very stupid.

But we're not only talking about stopping fireworks on Diwali its about every other day too. What astounds me is that people have the audacity to portray an act ignorance that this isn't a year occurrence and its something that just happens when it happens, like they haven't seen fireworks for sale? I saw fireworks for sale like a month back.

Ahhh you are still harping on about this being only for Diwali... its not, most of us want these specific types of fireworks banned for every day.

People spend their money on stupid things and it is a nuisance I agree but if you don't like something do your part. I had a dog, I trained him, I didn't make my pet another person's issue.

Once again, what makes you think that people did not foresee this? Simply the fact that they're complaining about it? Are we now not supposed to complain if we foresaw it? People took precautions but they're still going to complain because you're still not supposed to be making such a nuisance of yourself.

I also foresee people trying to break into my house, therefore I put up burglar bars. Am I now not supposed to speak out against burglars ever again? Not allowed to complain because burglars exist?

Your logic is flawed, as always.
 
This entire argument can be summed up like this:

RiaX and similar defender of fireworks: I think it is legal, so fsck all of you, we don't care!

Everyone else: be considerate and understand that accepting of religion or culture has no bearing on acceptance/tolerance of fireworks. They are mutually exclusive concepts. And fireworks are an irresponsible nuisance...

I don't know if you did or did not take precautions but you did not have a problem for Diwali.

:D I'm just wondering why they don't go after the suppliers of these "illegal" fireworks. Every year there's just a great big complain fest about the Hindu celebration. Personally I detest the loud bangs and see no reason for it.

We're not talking about stopping fireworks on Diwali at all. We're lamenting the fact that there is, still, a widespread scourge of people who seek to use something like Diwali as an excuse to recreate the Battle of Normandy, even if their customs don't call for going completely bat-**** overboard.

As I said earlier, it was bearable in my immediate surrounds, but I could hear numerous explosions clearly kilometres away. Had I been closer to those areas I'm fairly certain it would've ended up in bruised eyes and slashed tyres, because no other strategy seems to work.

That's not OK, and people defending such conduct are either bleeding hearts or morons... or a fair bit of both.

Do whatever you want, celebrate however you want, but not at the unreasonable cost of others. It's not difficult. :(

I really don't understand why these people don't seem to understand that this is all we're asking. They expect us to be accommodating, but they refuse to be accommodating themselves.
