Diwali Fireworks

I really don't understand why these people don't seem to understand that this is all we're asking. They expect us to be accommodating, but they refuse to be accommodating themselves.

Because reasons. And culture. And religion. Demanding politically correct tolerance has become the crutch of the most backward elements of society.

I give up, the stupidity displayed by certain members in this thread is clearly an attempt to troll the rest of us, and if it isn't well then I despair for a certain sector of humanity.

If fireworks result in the injury of a person or an animal, then the person responsible for setting off the fireworks is civilly liable. If the firework itself is illegal, the person responsible is both civilly, and criminally liable.

More importantly here, are the number of animals that through sheer desperation in their efforts to get out of a situation that they do not understand, and is often tantamount torturous for them, land up getting loose and are run over or lost. In my experience few people who celebrate Diwali actually take cognizance of the fireworks and their intended meaning. Instead it is simply an excuse to let off fireworks for the sake of it and it becomes a competition for the biggest and loudest bangs.

When I was a teenager I had the same mindset. Luckily I grew up and developed an understanding of the repercussions of my actions, and subsequently put an end to my bursting of loud fireworks for the sake of it.

In this case all that pet-owners and people who actually work after Diwali and Guy Fawkes are asking is that people adopt a similarly mature logic when deciding what fireworks to burst. It does not have to be loud. The light significance is in effect metaphorical in any case. No Hindu believes that his fireworks have truly warned off evil spirits for the rest of the year. So just be responsible. There are a ton of legal fireworks that don't involve bomb-like sound effects. Enjoy them, by all means. It is about the light in any case, not the sound...

This is the post I agreed with.

Apparently everyone has to sedate every single one of their pets every year so that these clowns can fire off their replica scud missiles.

Or you can leave your best friend scared as hell if you're that type of human being...

You're dealing with a liar in a certain forumite who every time a topic relating to science crops up, he's supposedly busy working on precisely that thing, yet suggests that people count the seconds to determine distance, and doesn't understand the concept of a triangle and equidistant lengths once a rocket is propelled into the air and drifts slightly. You then have those who earlier in the thread seemed to agree with everyone when consideration and common decency was called for, but then quickly changed their tune once the legalities were brought up.

These are people who will not change their minds, irrespective of the sound arguments made. It is at the end of the day, pointless to continue trying to debate this with them, because you will never find a middle ground. Next year we'll be back doing the same thing, saying the same things, hearing the same-old, tired attempts to support the practice, by the same people, or people with the same mindset.

I've reached a point where I actually no longer give two hoots what a supporter has to say. No argument that I can conceive of will convince me that the bastardisation of their own culture at the expense of me and others around me is tolerable. The same applies to morons on Guy Fawkes who celebrate...nothing! Absolutely nothing!

I've noticed the liar part....

As for the main issue , I will be discussing the issue of large fireworks with the neighbourhood watch at the next meeting. Next time we will not be polite, if it happens again, and the police are willing we will contact the police and come with them the minute the first rocket goes off. Regardless of the celebration.

Homoeopathic remedies like Rescue are about as effective as swallowing pure batschit! Actual sedatives are incredibly dangerous, and should only be administered by a qualified vet. Prescribed sedatives simply attempt to relax an animal into a hopelessly tired state, in which case mine still schits herself (literally), but cannot physically make her way outside to do so. There is no preventative measure for animals that are petrified.

Personally, I love the spectacle of fireworks. The lights excite the 8 year old in me. But that's about it. And to continually support it for the sake of exciting the 8 year old in me would be moronic...

I also love fireworks... but my only support for it revolves around organised displays that are held in a safe location away from residential areas.

I actually miss the fireworks displays from the old Durban Tattoo.

What is Guy Fawkes anywayz? The not explosion of buildings of parliament?

Not at all. He was responsible for guarding the gunpowder beneath the House Of Lords that was intended to be used to assassinate King James I, in order to reinstate a catholic monarch to the throne. And they failed! And this happened in Britain! In 1605! And was a part of a pseudo-religious war going on in in Britain at that time.

It is fscking ridiculous. It's like celebrating a failed coup every year. A FAILED coup...!

RiaX and similar defender of fireworks: I think it is legal, so fsck all of you, we don't care!

Funny thing is, they keep proclaiming that it is legal. They keep quoting exemption from the Jo'burg bylaw, yet when shown Tshwane and eThekwini prohibiting any firework use in residential areas, they can't show how it is exempted in one of those two metros. I don't believe there is any kind of religious exemption in either Tshwane or eThekwini, so, unless there is exemption (which still has to be shown), it is against city bylaw in those two metros to use any fireworks.
