Diwali Fireworks

Earlier in the thread people were attempting to state that there was a lot of exaggeration going on, but I actually think that there is a lot of under-exaggeration going on.

Can you guys supporting it not empathise with the sheer, unadulterated terror that must go on in an animal's mind to quite literally piss and schit themselves, and to harm themselves (in some cases really badly) in an attempt to escape a situation that they have no contextual understanding of?
 
I'm out as I have to study. If you use fireworks for whatever reason adhere to the bylaws, if you own a pet do your part as a responsible pet owner.

Ok so you need me to clarify what I thought would be an obvious distinction.

Fireworks in a residential area I have a problem with. Organised fireworks displays away from residential areas I am ok with.

Here we go again! Please state the precautionary measures that pet owners must take, taking into account my previous posts on this subject. I suspect that you're jk8, and you're just trolling again. And lastly, you agreed that people should be considerate and not let off loud explosive-esque fireworks. But now you simply state that people must abide by the bare minimum by-laws - fsck the people and animals around them?

This is the mindset I was referring to earlier...:rolleyes:

I assume people should exercise reason when using fireworks and pet owners should do the same when they know people are gonna start using fireworks for whatever reason suits them

Don't forget that when it was pointed out that these over-the-counter sedatives don't work, they shifted the goalposts by saying the dog's reaction is influenced by the owner and the only reason the dog reacts badly to fireworks is because the owner does.

Don't expect an answer from this guy. Their collective well of bull****ting responses ran out a while back.

That was the bullschit pharmacist, who over the course of his existence here has now become a pharmacological researcher on absolutely everything that we discuss on mybroadband. Apparently. He watches too much Dog Whisperer and seems to think that dogs are psychic and that all pet owners have some severe, violent, visceral reaction to the sound of fireworks. I do not engage with that particular breed of aborted logic...
 
I found this Link for Joburg.
In terms of the City's by-laws, no person should use fireworks within 500 metres of any explosives factory, explosives storage place, petrol depot or petrol station, inside any building, at any public place or at any school, old age home or hospital. A fine of R1 500 may be slapped on any person found violating these laws.

Lighting or igniting fireworks in any place where animals are present will incur a fine of R1 000.

However, permission is not needed on days of cultural and religious celebrations, but the fireworks may only be set off during stipulated times. These include Diwali, Chinese New Year, Human Rights Day, Guy Fawkes Day, Christmas Eve and the Day of Goodwill.

On these days, fireworks can be set off between 7pm and 10pm. Setting them off outside these times carries a R500 fine. It is illegal to let off fireworks after midnight on any day except New Year's Eve. On this day, fireworks are only allowed between 11pm and 1am.

A fine R1 500 can be incurred for the illegal use of firecrackers or fireworks in public. The by-laws also specify that only licensed dealers may sell fireworks.

New Year's Day from 7pm to 10pm;
Lag b'omer from 7pm to 10pm;
Chinese New Year from 7pm to 10pm;
Human Rights Day from 7pm to 10pm;
Freedom Day from 7pm to 10pm;
Diwali from 7pm to 10pm;
Guy Fawkes Day from 7pm to 10pm;
Christmas Eve from 7pm to 10pm; and
Day of Goodwill from 7pm to 10pm.

(c) on any agricultural holding;
(d) at any public place; or
(e) at any school, old age home or hospital.

(2) No person may light or ignite fireworks in any place where animals are
present.


(3) Unless so authorised in terms of section 33, no person may light or ignite
fireworks on any day or at any time except -

(a) New Years Eve from 23h00 to 01h00;
(b) New Years Day from 19h00 to 22h00;
(c) Hindu New Year from 19h00 to 22h00;
(d) Lag b’omer from 19h00 to 22h00;
(e) Chinese New Year from 19h00 to 22h00;

Why do you not admit pet owners have a role to play too?

I think the biggest issue here was that Diwali took place on a day before some of you have work thus the noise is getting to you which I can understand, but today is a school holiday so it can mainly be kids doing such things into such late hours.

The only gripe I have with fireworks is the litter it causes but my neighbors are very tidy with their surroundings.
 
Miss the good old days when we could detonate our own fireworks without harassment. Organised displays are no substitute.

The most soothing thing for scared dogs is to have their guardians close by. It's pretty easy for me to distract Hannah with games, brushing, petting, or food, and I make sure that I act upbeat and calm in order to reinforce the idea that she doesn't have a reason to be afraid.
Drowning out fireworks with white noise or, even better, with "Through a Dog's Ear" CDs, which are specially created by a sound scientist, a veterinarian, and a concert pianist to calm anxious dogs, makes the loud booms seem less frightening, and shutting the curtains and keeping the lights on helps to camouflage any sudden bursts of light.
Melatonin is the best calming natural supplement for dogs, and you can find it at any health food store. Give your dog from 1 to 4 mg, depending on bodyweight, and try to give it a little ahead of the fireworks, if possible.
A Thundershirt might well be the best solution of all. This snug garment (based on the same principle as swaddling a baby) has a very high success rate at calming anxious dogs. Many pet supply stores and vets now stock them.
