So my net has been abit slower than usual for the past week or so.
Im on a 384k line with SAOL.

Strangely enough, then sent me the following email:

Subject: ADSL Line too slow
Dear Client If you are finding your connection too slow, upgrade your line speed from 384k to 512k for a difference of R150.00 a month. Your total monthly cost will be R*** per month . Please reply with confirmation, and we will process the upgrade for you, there is no downtime. Please feel free to contact me should you have any queries Thank you Neethi

So are they unethical enough to screw me over with throttling so that I will feel the need to upgrade and pay them more?

Ive been a loyal ADSL customer to SAOL from December 2005.

uncapped, as long as i stay under 30gb, everything should be good....

The same thing happened to me whilst on SAOL a few months back.
The 30gig limit fell away to 20.

Latency went to hell so i had to pay an extra R100 to keep my throttling away, but they changed their minds and recommended i buy single gigs instead with a 4mb line for the same price as what i was paying.

At that point i went to Openweb signed up for Gold uncapped and have been very happy ever since.

Do what you need to do to get a better deal mate, and let them keep your line rental whilst you get an account that performs better.

It looks like a form of corporate intimidation.
Write back to them and mention the fact that you're a loyal customer and if this continues, you're jumping ship.
They'll rather return your speeds then lose you as a customer.

Then you might need to look at howmuch you DL'd in the last 10 days.

The way i understand it's a ''rolling window'' meaning =1-10, 2-11,3-12, 4-13.......... As everytime the prev day falls off & the newone gets added.

I would say though that that email does read ''a lil mafia style'' especially as your line got crippled before they sent it.

SAOL will move your line back to Telkom instead of cancelling it. At least they did when I asked them. Something to keep in mind when moving to another ISP. I also had my line upgraded by Telkom in less than an hour after it was moved back to them.

SAOL get their bandwith from Cybersmart, I think? People have been complaining of big issues with Cybersmart uncapped this past week or so.

No thats exceedingly unlikely. People will find out & they will lynch someone. Its too much of a risk for a company.

It is far more likely that the quality of the service simply dropped.

Grab some other ISP's data (say the free Afrihost). If that is faster then switch to either mweb or openweb.

Sounds like a fairly obvious ploy to spend more of your money with them :P

Give them the finger and go elsewhere :)

What on earth are you doing on SAOL? They are worse than Telkom...

I left them 2 years ago and have been happy since. They are seriously dodgy.
