I did the whole copy in school thing, but since having a job I've basically gotten rid of all of those copies and bought legit software. I now have a huge collection of games, some of them classics. Some have great manuals and extras while others are basically box and disk with maybe one sheet in *cough*The Orange Box*cough* 
Way back when I also used to get them for my PS1 console, used to go to certain shops and ask for "copy games", and they would go scratch in the back and bring it to you. Mostly Chinese made I think.
I no longer believe in piracy, and will never ever buy from those kinds of shops again. I do deplore the drastic copy protection schemes some companies use, it really can mess up your enjoyment of the game if it interferes. Copy protection is fine, but ideally it should not interfere with the game in any way.
