Yes, I did a tender for the PO a while ago (never got awarded, it went to a French company that had big purse), anyway a lot of rural SA relies on snail mail and they have a right to access mail.

The government fails, yet again, no functioning Postal service, unusable rural roads, almost non existant internet in rural areas. It is a severe trail being a government supporter when you live in a rural area.

I deal a lot with people in the UK and other parts of Europe and it's embarrassing when you have to tell people not to post anything to you in South Africa because we don't have a functioning postal service and there's almost a 100% chance that whatever they want to post to you will never get to you.
I have a Manchester United Kit with my name on it, Shipped from Old trafford via DHL , last seen at the poest Office. If anyone Finds it, please do notify me, Its easy to identify, ITS GOT MY NAME ON IT !

Many countries around the world have a functioning state owned postal service.

Unlike South Africa, those countries have functional State Institutions, unlike here. Not that it is undesirable, or not needed, to have a Postal Service, just that here State entities are all dysfunctional, bankrupt, and cannot deliver basic service delivery.

Personal experience, it took the local post office 4 months to deliver a notice to collect a parcel. 4 months after their stamp of receipt on the notification slip, I received from them, almost to the day.

Then they have the bald faced cheek, to ask me why it has taken me 4 months to collect my parcel.

My reply was "Lady, I only received the slip, I am presenting to you to collect my very long awaited parcel at 15:50 yesterday, afternoon, it is now 09:00 the following morning. Excuse me"

Yes, we still need a Postal Service for legal documents, registered mail, the odd postcard for Christmas from abroad etc. But it's doesn't need to be state owned... well definitely not this state in its current state anyway.

This.. I think people who want the post office to be gone in it’s entity also believe gov shouldn’t exist.

Rather the way I see it.. the post office should exist.. but the idea of it yes.. not necessarily the entire business.

Ie building remains, hubs remain, they, gov sets costs, business can choose if they want to run various aspects of if.

Ie imagine your mail, your parcel, oh and food get delivered on the same day by a delivery person by Uber delivery, but your parcel went via takealot, letter via postnet and food pickup via Uber.. or you can get the parcel delivered to the parcel box at work.

Ie postal service is a need that’s not going away but how it gets done needs to be changed. You could also then open up delivery in a Uber like manner to multiple 3rd parties to fulfill without direct labour.
They run it like a business and that's why it's a failure.
They even baffle themselves with their BS.

I don't understand what's special about SAPO only it has the monopoly on renewing a car licence.
I don't see how that has anything to do with communication, neither does the size or weight of a parcel.
ICASA likes to dictate nonsense instead of regulating competitionn.

This is a big NO. South Africa does not need a Post Office.

Grants should be made totally electronic and people, no matter where they are should open a normal bank account into which grants can be paid.

International post can already be done through EMS, Fedex, DHL and the likes. Local post can be done by private courier.

Any other service the post office offers are irrelevant and can be replaced by the private sector.

The Post Office, like any other SOE is a money hog and emptying the state coffers and ripping off the tax payer.

Get ready for non-urban area delivery prices to sky rocket.

The long and the short of it all is that some aspects of its function remain valid.. the labour though does not when this aspect is better served ad-hoc & with tech

Yes. Where else must I renew my license disk? I'm not going to the licensing department.
For mail? No. Everything is sent via email nowadays.

Yes, but it shouldn't be state owned, too many issues. They don't want the competition to render the exact same services but don't want to pull their socks up and do what a post-office supposed to. Just like Telkom with the spectrum saga...and who suffer the consequences, the people below.

From abroad: if you pop into my local NZ Post outlet with an item to send to South Africa, the clerk (who really knows her stuff) will strongly advise you to send via the International Express Courier option, otherwise it's more likely than not that the item will disappear into a black hole upon arriving in South Africa. That's because the International Express Courier option doesn't go anywhere near the South African Post Office: NZ Post sends it overnight to Auckland, then hands it over to DHL (just down the road at Auckland Airport) and makes it their problem.

As far as a lot of entities outside of South Africa are concerned, the private sector has already taken over.

All you ****ers who voted no, how will you get your sub 1kg parcels now?

Viva SAA, Eskom and sapo.

Pay your ****in' tv license.
I have not receive any parcells and/or letters in the past three years. This year I stopped using Post Office for parcells and informed everyone that I am moving to email. I also do not own TV's or watch any form of TV.
