I suspect @ArmatageShanks is one of an increasing cohort who have never asked let alone answered the elementary questions of politics and social living, such as:

- What are rights? How do they differ from favours, privileges, concessions, grants, indulgences, bestowals and the like?

- What is the source and origin of rights? The State? Government favour? The Strong? Society? Corollary of natural obligations? Human nature and its author (God)?

- How are rights claimed, vindicated, protected?

- Can rights legitimately be taken away or suspended? If so, by whom (where do they get that right?), and under what circumstances?

I am of the school that does not recognise the state or society as the origin of rights. Rather, the state exists to protect, defend and vindicate rights we all have independent of the state (in my view, needless to say). That's what lies behind my No vote in this poll. And my opposition to the very notion of "rights" (ie entitlement) to stuff that is made available by the labour of others.
