There is a fundamental different between the right to access the internet, and being provided access to the internet.

And for the government to "facilitate" that right should be by providing internet access at places like Libraries etc, not by handing out data to all and sundry.

No. It isn't necessary for survival and the maintenance of human dignity.

Water, Food, Shelter. These are the basics of survival.
That wasn't the question.
Human rights are not the same as survival requirements

Human rights are usually regarded as essentials for maintaining human dignity, independence, equality and respect.

Arguably the most fundamental of these rights is the right to life. Access to clean water, food and shelter are usually regarded as inherently part of that right because they're essential to human life.

It was indeed part of the question.

No, neither is access to a newspaper or anything else you'd use the internet for.

Lets not dilute the purpose of human rights by allocation all kinds of popular but frivolous things to it.

Quite the edgy take there, reminds me of the Libertarian Police Department comedy sketch

here's a few more hot Libertarian takes
  • You have the right to 10L of clean water daily - but you are responsible for fetching your daily allocation from your nearest bulk water treatment site
  • You have the right to education - but you are responsible for paying for your books and materials and teaching yourself
  • You have the right to a safe environment - but you have to uber the police to your crime scene and any patrols
  • You have the right to free movement - but you have to pay tolls to to every property owner your road crosses as should be no public road infrastructure because no one should be compelled to pay for someone else's free passage
Seems some days that my right to a safe environment is infringed upon by PDI's like Malema says for their suffering and victimhood for thousands of years before I was even born.

No. Was access to libraries etc basic human rights before the internet?

A basic human right? **** no!

Is universal access to internet in the best interest of society? Almost certainly yes.

Most things humans think of as a basic human right is not that at all. In fact, I can not think of a real human right besides the right not to pollute. So much for that right....

I don't agree with you but I get where you are coming from.

People want the rights without the responsibility. And the "important" people mention this way to little.
