Nope, renewables are not the solution - look at what is happening in Europe. No gas, winter is coming.... and renewables cannot cope with the demand.

Hardly a concern, 80% of their 83% produced need is renewables.
It's just an example of what's becoming possible though, as already pointed out they're a small country.

Use the name low carbon or something.
They have a very short life and they need extensive minerals from the earth.
So far the most renewable energy form is nuclear.
We would never be able to exhaust the nuclear fuel on this planet.
There is literally no energy that doesn't impact the environment.
Solar and wind just hide behind the companies doing the mining using fossil fuels and the environmental damage done by rare earths mines

The wind will blow 4eva (disclaimer: mostly, in some areas).

I don't think solar or geothermal are renewable. When the sun runs out and the earth's core cools, you can't recharge them.
Wind will stop at that point as well.
You both realise the equipment doesn't last forever right?
Once you have a panel it isn't just free energy forever.
At some point that panel needs to be replaced.
It isn't 100% recyclable, not even close to that.
And the watt per panel is so laughable low that you need to mine a sh#t ton of minerals per power production plant.
I have no qualms about using renewables.
I prefer it over coal, gas and other fossil fuels.
But calling it sustainable is ignorant
Furthermore it is without a doubt less carbon neutral than nuclear fuel.
Lastly nuclear (which btw. is not a fossil fuel) is essentially inexhaustible thus far more realistic solution
Nobody is saying it's perfect, and yes, as always, the labels are misleading in industry.
But it does a lot better than you think you know.
And nuclear - maybe elsewhere, though even the perfectly balanced Japs got it wrong.

No technology lasts for ever so its a mute point.
And I'm also a supporter of nuclear but its not inexhaustible either. In the sense that you need resources to enrich uranium.
Relative to other technologies "renewable" energy is totally renewable. We wont run out of sun, wind or geothermal energy.
The technologies behind harvesting those sources will only get more effiecient.
Burning coal will only ever just be burning coal.

Yes and so will the world so its a moot point.
I'm sure his comment was just tongue in cheek.
You all seem to suffer under the illusion that a country just builds nuclear.
Nuclear energy is globally controlled because once you have a nuclear power plant you can create plotonium with which you can build nuclear weapons.
For example, Koeberg, and I was told this by someone who works there.
They have video cameras everywhere. Those cameras are 100% under the governance of the IAEA.
They can walk in there at any time and turn off that reactor.
That technology is leased and controlled by the super powers.
There is no way you can just go ahead and use their technology how you want.
No other power industry has that level of regulation.
Especially coal, it has no regulation, that is why countries so easily make the choice to drop their standards on it.
But not only is it stupid to drop your standards on nuclear, the owners of that technology will not let you do that.
As for Fukushima, it was a learning experience and since then, the regulations have tightened to prevent it from occuring again.
Even Koeberg had to undergo upgrades because of the outcomes of Fukushima.
Not because they wanted to, per se, because they had no choice.
Wtf. are you talking about. You need uranium. And even if you run out of uranium (Which btw. is practically impossible given the volume used vs amount on the planet), there are other heavy elements (aka unstable) which also emit a lot of energy.
We've already discussed this all quite a bit here earlier, so just a quick summary of all that is a concern and all that could be messed with anyway despite best efforts of others;

If the ANC cuts out the IAEA and the country immediately goes under sanctions like Iran
I can't say this enough, the country doesn't own the technology used to run a nuclear power plant.
They get to use it by the blessing of the super powers in exchange for following their rules
