A lot more people here so far that don't have them and don't want to.

They're necessary in a situation like KZN was, I'll give you that. But some won't even agree with that thinking.
Yes, and so it's your duty to be strong and protect those around you. Show me how one does that with a pool noodle in your hand?

It's ok then, those with guns will come and save you.
Nope. To each their own.

I bought mine to defend my family.
I pay to have my family train with my weapons.
I pay to do competitions and better my competence.
I pay to be part of gun communities that fight for my right to own.

If poef hits the fan, aunty gun people should be handled like the people with "defensive driving".

Why do you have nice things other people want?
Why did you not put enough security on your home?
You phoned the police twice, why not thrice?

your duty to be strong and protect
Already covered. In an urban robbery not creating a threat is a defence that mostly works. Unless losing your owned possessions is more important than that?

We can go round and round all day.
There's not a set of arguments here that any are likely to cave into, we all know how we all feel. Use guns at home if you must, but also don't try to convince us otherwise.

You need to do your competency first. I didnt do it due to finances but try to do all 4 at once and its done...
Then get a gun, a safe and apply for your licence. You can also pay people to assist you with the paperwork.
It's a bit of a mission depending on your local SAPS and the DFO's availability and involves a wait but its worth it at the end.

(Remember its not just the gun, afterwards comes the belt, holsters, mags, ammo, range fees, different clothes etc...)

I have to dress like im a size 38 when im a 34 to conceal it. im sure everyone thinks im bigger than i am.

When i did mine it was R980 think its R1900 for competency cert
70 for cops competency
Cant remember maybe 70 to 140 for license app
7k to 18k rough est for gun
Safe i had already
680 for daniels holster
350 to 900 for box 50 rounds
Spare mags 700+- each
Daniels double Mag pouch 700 each

All gets done in stages so no need to fork out for everything straight away.
Go speak to you local gunshop, some even let you pay the gun off

I actually wound up buying 2 safes (but I only have handguns)...one is pretty obvious in the linen closet with my old passport and a few Rands in cash but the other one I spent a bit of time hiding and secured it well.

As for holsters...I wasted a good few pennies on crap ones before finally getting a decent Mtac leather/kydex one that is 'shirt tuckable' and one cheap Kydex one with an Ulti clip for when I dont want to wear a belt. I think thats the norm though? You cant really tell until you have bought one and worn one for a while. I like the cheap leather holster I have but it isnt great for reholstering. I bought a belly band for running/cycling buts its terrible so I just used the holster with the clip on my shorts.

Clothing wise...I used to live in rugby shorts and T shirts and had to buy a few extra jeans a size or two up and shorts with belt loops... Also bought some larger T shirts and shirts. But thats fine...I never really buy clothes anyway so these should last me a good while.

I would love a ratchet style belt but could only afford a Ross leather belt....Maybe oneday...(I also discovered when I had to formally dress up the other day that my leather belt is a tight squeeze in my formal pants belt loops...)

And check to see how long they will hold a firearm for before charging you additional storage fees...
