I was issued a ticket when stopped next to the road. My ID number was copied wrongly on the fine from my driver's license. On the ticket the amount was written One thousand rand and underneath that, one hundred rand - so I've got no idea what the amount should be. Went to the Traffic court in Kempton park, they can't find it as my ID number is wrong. I sent a registered letter in November last year and asked for them to scrap it because of all the mistakes and asked for a reply - received nothing yet.

Didn't have a fine in almost 5 years, then 4 weired ones for not stopping dead at a stop sign in the suburbs...recorded somehow by magic radar equipment from the back side without physical enquipment on the white line... 1.5k each btw?

Deliver the summons to me personally and lets deal in court!
 
A speeding fine will ONLY be paid if they come and fetch it. Tsek.

I do however take exception to the fact that the majority of people do NOT stop at stop streets, and get away with it. It's insane the amount of people who don't even attempt to stop.

I guess it's easy to see on a camera when someone does not stop at a stop street, even from behind.

Drove the same route to rugby practice. 80kmh zone with a shadow monkeys always behind a bush. I stick to the speed limit.
Long story short I get a fine for driving 80 in a 60 zone R1500.00 as its near a school which is a red zone. This happen on a 4 lane road with a 80km/h speed limit board on a Sunday.

I go take pictures of the road showing the 80kmh zone from both sides. I mail them that the boards are showing 80km/h.
I am told with arto I need to first pay and then dispute. (Was in about 2007) So as a good citizen I pay the fine.
I then mail them proof of payment and the photos showing the road and boards showing the 80km/h speed limit.

I received the following response in line of

" can you proof that the limit was 80km/h on the day you were caught." So I mailed them back can you proof that the limit was 60 kmh on the day.

So I get the following response. Once you pay you admitted guilt we will not look into this any further.

and to this day the limit is still 80kmh.

So I will never pay a speed fine ever.

How would you know it's a fine, there will be no indication of that on the collection slip you'd get in your mailbox, even the fine letter itself is pretty nondescript. You'd only know what it was if you'd received one before

If you have a PO Box go and change your address to that address. By law they have to hand deliver the summons and you have to sign for it. With a PO Box they have no proof that you've received the summons.

They do sometimes send them as a registered letter, once you have signed for the letter that serves as the summons being served.

Only the prosecutor can write it off, you need to find the court where traffic offenses are heard and then go and see the prosecutor, just phone the court and ask when he will be available.

I had a similar thing a yr or 2 ago, they made an error of some sort writing the fine out, I took it to the prosecutor he acknowledged the error rendered it not legal and scrapped the fine.

I don't collect those either. If I happen to expect something I ask the person behind the counter to show me the return address. I do this because these bloody debt collectors are resorting to this tactic now. Once you have signed they have confirmation of your address. They've been chasing me for an Edgars account which I've paid years ago, looking for a settlement letter. They can go fluck themselves.
 
Yes, .... but the inconvenience and difficulty of paying the fine makes it challenging to be a good citizen.
 
Yes, I speed nearly every time I drive in 60 zones, rarely caught, always pay.
 
I pay my speed fines if I fetch it at the Post Office.. and if I recall speeding on the day it suggests I was.
parking fines are a whole other story though - I usually contest them on the day I receive them cos there's always incorrect information written on the ticket.
 
So I pay of I know I was in the wrong and can identify the place and can see how it happened. If not no will not pay and will take the matter further.

But to show how stupid some of these so-called speeding fines are, below is a road in Pretoria where I will definitely not ever pay a fine.

The M10 has a generally a 80km/hr speed limit except for a small portion between Ashwood road and the R101, where there is a sign when travelling in a westerly direction dropping the speed limit to 60 km/hr. Travelling in an easterly direction there is a very obscure sign on this section but it is also 60km/hr. Approaching the R101 from the west, the M10 is 80 km/hr in both directions.

Immediately after Ashwood when travelling East, there is a sign that says the limit is 100km/hr until one gets close to the bridge over the R28 into Pretoria where there is a sign for 80km/hr. Yet that same road in a westerly direction the limit is 80 km/hr.

The road after Ashwood is completely safe at 100 km/hr up to the off/on ramp at the R28. Yet in the other direction the limit is 80?

These anomalies exist all over the country. Typically in Gauteng many through roads will have a limit of 70- 80 km/hr (Lynwood Rd is an example of a generally two lane per direction road with a 70 km/hr limit in parts). Yet in Cape Town a similar road will have a limit of 60? An example which is the same as Lynwood Rd in Pretoria is the M25 though The Northern suburbs with sections that are no different to Lynwood Rd in Pretoria.

The law is an Ass as the saying goes aided abetted by authorities who have no clue as to what they are doing.

Only if I receive the summons, otherwise I claim I never received the fines (and most of them I don't receive, just get SMS's for some reason, I guess it is cheaper).
 
if you on standardbank banking there is a tab pay fines. Go and check how many fines you have you do not know about
 
I wait for a summons & then take the fine for a reduction at court, first before paying it.
